i came across a norinco chinese sks in the gun shop that i work at... i didnt buy it off the guy one of my other working associates gave him a low offer and we got it for next to nothing... is this a good gun? i have heard shit about norinco.... any clarity?

Mine is a bit of an ugly duckling with a lot of rough mill work and ugly wood (Compared to my Yugo SKS.), but it is a great shooter.
I've seen pretty minty ones with asking prices of $250 to $300.

I have a type 56 I bought in '88. It works fine and is more accurate than mmy AKs.  My advice is pick it up.

I like the Norincos much more than the Yugos.

Russian....Chinese....then the rest. Norincos are some of the best SKSs out there. Yugos they are finding issues with, dont ask me what I dont own one, just stuff Ive heard on other boards. Id go with the Chinese...and parts up the ass for them.

The issues I have seen at the range with Yugos tend to come from ignorant owners, not problems with the guns. Many problems due to not cleaning out the cosmolene well enough, one problem due to reinstalling the firing pin wrong so it bound up, one guy installed the bolt carrier spring backwards and it bent. At the times I met these folks they were all blaming the guns for being junk instead of questioning their own intelligence.
So I'd have to say the biggest problem with many SKS's is a loose nut behind the trigger.
Somtimes I think I should just stop telling them what went wrong and start making low ball offers on their junk guns.

SG now carries Chinese made new hardwood stock for SKS's for under $20. Has some hardware, but no handgaurd. Looks like my ugly duckling Norinco won't be ugly for too much longer.

I also got a ventilated black steel handgaurd to replace my cracked wood one. I'll give my Norinco SKS a "Albanian" look. I had to do something with it. It's stock is awful. But it's a great shooter.

The milled ones with threaded and pinned barrels suck.  With that said, will you ship that sucky rifle to my FFL in Louisiana for $130?

The only issues with the Yugo.......... is sometimes the gas block & switch has rusted due to corrosive ammo or due to poor storage.

Remember the Yugo's are " MILLED" parts....not stamped like other makers. Also the Yugo tended to build their rifles extra strong to account for their "Hot" ammo and lack of a large Factory out-put that could easily replace broken guns.

You can easily buy "UN-Issued" Yugos which are essentially  NEW rifles !!  All matching parts down to the firing pin ! I bought mine for $149.........rilfe manufactured in 1970. You can't get better than NEW !

No lug to install the bayo on!  I am still trying to figure out why the import company shaved the hooks of the lug off, which is quite obvious when looking at the bottom of the rifle  After all, the gun had no pistol grip and a fixed box.  It should have been allowed to have at least one evil feature.

ETA:  I had a Russian SKS with a bayonet lug and bayonet on it, but that sucker grew legs and walked away from me.  I still have one unused ass whooping that I am going to cash in when one of the members of the family comes clean and admits to taking it.

gunz4me, that is the EXACT same gun i was thinking about getting if it is still there. also, there has been a Yugoslavian M48A come in and its a little cheaper but in mint shape and i like it better i think... what should i do men? the M48A or the chinese SKS? which has more available ammo? the M48A shoots the 8mm round. help!!!

I like my Chinese SKS a lot.  My only regret for that gun was not picking up the scope that goes on the factory installed mount because I have not seen a scope for my rifle in 10 years.  Another regret is not having a gun safe 10 years ago which would have prevented my Russian SKS from walking away along with a dozen 30 round AK magazines.

As for ammo, 7.62x39mm ammo is hard to find these days.  I am down to a couple of Wolf spam cans, a Portuguese battle pack, 500 rounds of Norinco, and 1,000 rounds of Marlboro man Monarch ammo.  I must get more!

Personally, I would go for another Chinese SKS before I would purchase a bolt action M48A.  For bolt action, I would pick the 7.62X54R Mosin Nagant.

THANKS MAN, HELL I FORGOT I HAD MENTIONED THIS IN THIS THREAD. I STARTED ANOTHER ONE ON THE SAME QUESTION... REGARDING THE MAUSER AND THE SKS. DAMN, FORGIVE ME FELLAS.

I got my box in from SG today. That $18 Norinco SKS stock is nice! Had a butt plate, trap door and swivel installed. I just needed to transfer the cross bolt off the old stock and the trigger group spring too. It had a few tiny dings and some dirt smudges. Cleaned up nice and I touched up the couple rubbed spots with clear lacquer to seal the wood. I drilled and pressed out the pin on the handgaurd and removed the old cracked wood. The new perforated steel handgaurd fit nice & snug with no filing. Came with a new pin and spring clip too. It gives the gun a Albanian look, but I like it! No more ugly duckling! Now it looks as good as it shoots! The stock only required a bit of shaving here & there with a utility knife to get a good fit on the action. I'm very happy with it now!

The only dumb thing SG did was put four loose boxes of Tokarev ammo in there! Those are fragile 50 year old cardboard boxes. They really should have wrapped them in paper before boxing. One box burst and I had 70 loose bullets in the big box! But since that's  the only problem I've had with them in all these years, I'll give them a pass.

I'm at school now and have a shooting range 5 min from the dorm so dont feel alone man me and my twoo friends have about 9 gun between us only one of them being bolt action( remington 700 in 223)

yea man, i am in school working on my masters and shooting guns all the time.. love this life. now i just need to get a REAL job! lol
