So I am thinking of getting an AK, just to round out my semi-auto collection, mostly.  I am looking at the Romanian ones that SOG has for like $289, but have also considered building one up out of an AMD-65 kit.  I've done lots of rifle builds before (AR-15s, FALs), and I could probably even handle doing a receiver flat, but I will probably either buy a complete rifle or at least a complete receiver and then build on that.   I'm looking for the least expensive route, so I don't want to hear about K-VAR and their overpriced kits or any of these $500+ AKs that seem to be everywhere.

What else is out there?

Romy hi-cap conversion is the cheapest. Even the AMD-65 will cost you $400 or so by the time you get a builder to assemble it.

I've got a WASR 10 hi-cap that shoots great.

I do believe the least expensive hi-cap out there right now is the WASR10. Less than $300 in most areas. Lots of other stuff available, but a bit more spendy.

I'm not a cheap bastard, it's just I don't want to throw a bunch of money into an AK.  I can put together a kit myself, in fact, that's what I may end up doing.  Although the Romos do seem attractively priced and I can probably do a few mods like add a slant brake, or folder or something like that.

The romanian guns function well but they are some of the roughest looking AK's out of the box. Although a wasr-10 with a simple furniture swap looks pretty good. Chinese guns tend to look better. Then the custom builds from ORF and such will look much better. But they will probably be out of your price range.

I may pick up a WASR-2 if they ever actually  get into the country. Maybe Kerry is holding them back on his swift boat with his m16 ::::rolls eyes:::::

They are now selling them with 'evil' features.

Wonder if the WASR-2's will have some evil features? WASR-2 (5.45) with a bayonet and a romanian side folder would be pretty cool.
