I want to outfit an AMD65 with wood stock, upper & lower handguards, and pistol grip. Major problem is the upper handguard. The amd tube is shorter than the standard gastube, and does not have the wood retainer piece on it. is it possible to remove this "wood retainer piece" from the regular gas tube, and fit it to the amd gastube? I can't tell for sure, but it might be silversoldered on. Anyone have any ideas?

I am planning to do the change to a regular handguard also. I bought a AKM gas tube, I plan to shorten it, heat the gasblock end up and use a socket extention as a mandel to expand it to fit the gasblock. I won't get around to it till this weekend, I'll let you know how it goes.

I have shortended 2 bulgarian 74 tubes already with the cut and expand method. I didn't have to heat them up. I experamented with the cut off section first and it expanded fine with out heat but I have read of others that have had them crack.
I used a arbor press and 3/8 extension to get the flare started and a 12mm socket that had the right od on it to finish it up.

I just modified a long gas tube for one of my AMD-65s today. I won't say it was a piece of cake, but it wasn't too hard to accomplish. I used a 3/8" socket extension to flare the end, it worked perfect, plus it gave me some "handle" to hold onto while I beat the extension into the red hot gas tube. I think my AMD-65 looks HOT with the wood furniture. The wood I used is from an SAR-3 I think.
