I would venture to say 5.56mm.
With the exception of the Chinese, all .223 AKs were originally developed for the military market. |

my vepr II is chambered in 5.56x45 but is marked .223 on the side. I emailed robarms and asked.

They will shoot either one...the chambers are not as tight as ours. Theres more play so it makes shooting military 5.56 or civilian .223 ok. My AKs that are .223 are marked 5.56.
