Just got my new and first AK today, but it only came with a 5-rd mag. Need to fix that ASAP.

But there are several choices out there.

E German steel mags

Romanian steel mags

Bulgarian polymer waffle mags

Chinese mags

etc.

Any of them more reliable than the other? I'm partial to the polymer waffle mags myself, since my new SAM7 doesn't have that traditional look.

Also, which capacity do you prefer - 20 rd, 30 rd, 40 rd?

Here's to cheap 7.62 X 39!

Personally, I get the cheapest steel mags, and pop in chrome followers.

East German steel mags. the rib makes them "more better". 30rnds.

i like the "tanker" mags (20rnd) alot too. there what i keep in the AK next to my bed.

to be honest, i just like the look of the E. Ger. ones. i dont like polymer mags. i dont think you will go wrong with any of the mags on the market today.

They all work well.

I prefer the Romanian magazines (No surprise there.....)

I normally use 30-round magzines.  I don't like the 40 rounders.

I hear the 20-round magazines are great for bench-rest shooting.

AK mags aren't like AR mags, you don't have to worry about getting "USGI Labelles" to make your rifle work properly. Any Com-bloc or Chinese mags will work fine.

That said, my favorite AK mags are Sako or Bulgarian waffles.

Bulgarian waffle mags hands down. They're thicker and better built than the Polish polymer mags. They'll match that Arsenal rifle you just purchased perfectly.

I don't think there is any reason to buy a steel AK mag these days, unless you're doing collecting or need to replicate an earlier AK model.

Steel is usually cheaper than the Bulgy Waffles. That said, I have 3 waffles, 2 20rnders, and a Romanian 40 rnder for my Maadi conversion. Haven't shot with it since Mr. Dremel made it possible, but all fit nicely. I think best advice is find what you like and use it.

They all work great, but my favorites are the bulgarian waffle mags and the 20 round hungarian tanker mags.

I would usually agree but the Bulgarian Waffles are too nice to pass up.

All this mention of waffles and ribs...

It's making me hungry!

I like my Norinco and Soviet bakelites personally.  Hard to come by anymore though.  Wish I'd grabbed more when they were cheap.

1) Polish polymer 30 rnd.
2) Bulgarian polymer 30 rnd.
3) Hungarian steel 20 rnd.

I like the polymer mags because they require no maintainance and will not corrode.  I prefer the Polish over the Bulgarian because they weigh less and seem durable enough.

#4. Norinco Drums 75 round

Bulgarian "waffle pattern" synthetic.  Impact and corrosion proof.
