Reviewed the AK buyers guide thread but it seems to be alittle dated.  I'm looking for a good shooter with a fixed stock, chrome lined barrel in the 800 to 1000 dollar range, suggestions?  Thanks in advance

In that range? SGL 21 or 31 depending on what caliber you want. Go Russian first, cry once.

Caliber? 5.45, 5.56 or 7.62?  The Bulgy's make a nice rifle in the SLR too....either way, I'd stick with Arsenal in that price range.

Another vote for the SLR series. I just bought my 107CR for a bit above $900 out the door. The FR will be a bit cheaper, but the CR gives you the option to SBR it down the road if you can. The Saiga SGL21-94 is going for about $1200 last I looked.

+1 for the SLR-107 series. But if you are determined to get a fixed stock, the SGL 21s are back in stock at K-Var

For 7.62x39 Caliber
1.SGL21/SLR-107 Both excellent rifles. Hard to say which is better.
2.VEPR/ Thicker receiver and perhaps a bit more accurate than the SGL21 or SLR-107.

5.45x39
1.SGL31
2. VEPR in 5.45x39

5.56x45
SLR-106

How's the guide dated then?  The only fixed stock 7.62 in the $800-1000 range is the SGL21?  That's in the guide.  A milled build will be above it and most Century build  should be cheaper than that.

I just bought my first AK and it was an SLR 107F. I really like it.

SGL-21 or 31 if you want to go the 5.45 route
SLR-107

I have a 21 and a 31. The 31 is pretty much responsible for getting me interested in AK's again. While they are not cheap rifles, in my opinion they are money well spent. I'm more than pleased with both of them. I've actually considered picking up a SLR-107 to add to the AK collection as well, due to all the good things I have heard about them as well

here is a pic of my two SGL's

Thanks everyone for the responses.  I have decided to go with the SGL21-73.  Now to find one.
