Well, this is something you are probably not going to have to worry about! Once one is running fine, it is like a Timex, it takes a licking, but keeps on ticking!
This would be my first AK and want it to leave a good impression on me. Looking to get my grandfather one for his 69 birthday also. What do you AK experts recomend?

My first question would be caliber choice? I would stay with either 7.62x39 or 5.45x39, with leanings towards the 5.45x39. This would also depend on ammo availibility in your neck of the woods.
If you go with the 7.62 the Arsenal builds are hard to beat right now, and a good bank for the buck. As far as Grandpa, I would let him shoot mine, and get a feel for it first. Recoil is not bad on either one, my 7 year old shoots both calibers of mine.
