.....On the Yugo AK?  Can you leave it off and let the reciever cover the hole, or does it hold the recoil spring top cover release botton in the correct postion?

Its like a safety for the recoil spring. It prevents the top cover from popping off when you launch a grenade.

Actually if you install your spring but don't let it go all the way back, and then install your top cover, you then press that button and the spring seats to the rear and locks the top cover.  Its an easy way to put that top cover on not found in other AKs and keeps the cover forward when seated.
