Archived [ARCHIVED THREAD] - Weld on rear trunion?

Would welding in one spot (one of the rear holes) on the rear trunion screw up its strength?  I broke a tap in the 4th hole, so I was thinking about mounting it with 3 screws and one weld.  I want to be careful here... I sure don't want that buffer spring support to fail due to a metallurgical change.

i have seen several ak's built ONLY using welds at the rivet holes. i don't think you'll be in for any surprises. preheat the steel with a torch...not glowing red...just good and hot.

you would be surprised what a tap extractor might do, though. and, a local machine shop with a sinker e.d.m. can burn that tap out for $20.

Thanks.  I noticed today that K-VAR sells new rear blocks for $17 but I think I'll just weld it.
