I just saw this over at www.cetmerifles.com:

NOTE : The atf has ruled that thumbhole stocks still count as having a pistol grip protruding below the action

Is this true?

I question it, because I thought that there were still rifles being imported that had thumbhole stocks on them - in addition to a couple of other "bad" features.

so, if thumbhole stocks are considered pistol grips, why do I still need to change out for US parts inorder to have a real pistol grip?

As for as the AWB is concerned it's a pistol grip, but for importing, it's not.
