I currently have a Colt LE6940 and a M&W M&P10 which are my two 'battle rifles' for come what may.  However, lately I have been thinking alot about the 7.62x39 and I have decided I want to switch to AK's in their native caliber as my home and truck guns.  I plan on using my new M92 Pap pistol as my dedicated truck gun and KV-13's as my home defense rifles (one for me and one for my wife).  Does this setup make sense or am I being dumb and making a mistake?

The main reason for the switch is purely because I like the power of the 7.62x39 far more than that of the .223.

Go for it, for the price of a new OPAP, compared to a 6940, it's a solid bargain for a solid rifle.

ETA: If you are thinking of selling, i'd keep the 6940 and ditch the MP10.

Why switch? Get both, grab whatever floats your boat on fo day.

I would take a hard look at a VZ58.  They are a much nicer rifle than any AK.

+1! Unless I have a particular dislike for any of my rifles or I have too much redundancy per caliber... I keep everything. You can NEVER have too many!

Save your money and pick up a WASR or M70/OPAP but keep your AR.

I got rid of my AR for an AK. While I liked the AK, im going back to the AR, plan on getting a WASR later on though.

Yeah, get both.

Fellas it sounds like he already has both. Two krebs kv-13s. I would keep all of them and use whatever you feel most comfortable with.

I need pics of everything before I can answer your question with a quality statement.

I personally would sell that m&p10 and pickup a SLR-107 or something, but I would never drop all my AR's for AK's. I have been looking to get an ASLR-107 myself, but I am having trouble spending that much money on an AK. In the past I have had terrible luck with four out of the six AK's I have owned, and would hate to spend $1,000 on a rifle and have issues. IMHO the Colt would be a better home defense gun anyways because you will have much less over penetration issues with the Colt. I also prefer an AR as a bug out rifle because the magazines are smaller, and lighter than a 7.62x39 magazine.

Lighter is about all IMHO....same accuracy, not AS reliable, proprietary parts and mags....I will take AK's

This. It's ok to like both . I wouldn't get rid of any of my AR's for AK's and vice versa.

Why?

That's like switching from redheads to blondes and considering brunettes.

Just keep doing all of them.

Why not just change your upper to 300 blackout?

Same magazines and lower, just different barrel.

Price per round, and the 7.62X39mm is still more pervelent than the .300 (I do love the .300, though).

OP:  Keep you ARs and get an AK, and stock up on E-Block mags, and ammo.

5.56
7.62X51mm
7.62X39mm

You will have all bases covered.

I dropped the AR for AK and i'm perfectly happy.

Don't get me wrong, i love the AR platform, i just got tired of the latest and greatest.

My SGL-31 does everything I need it to do with the advantage of being a stupidly simple machine.

I have some stripped lowers that keep begging me to build but I just have no interest in getting back into AR's.

I went from the AR to a 5.45 AK, now I sold the 5.45 AK and am going back to the AR15.  I do plan on getting another AK in the future, but it will be 7.62 and definitely not as expensive as my SGL 31-61.  Thinking personally inspected WASR.

AK in x39 with a folding stock is the perfect short range caliber carbine IMO. Three dozen countries, drug smugglers, pirates, and jihadsts cant all be wrong. Id keep the colt but get an 18 inch upper and then sell the 308 and get a bolt rifle in that caliber.

The AK doesn't fill the long range role well. A well set up AR is better suited for that task. But for what you are talking about the AK fits the bill.

Last 7.62 golden tiger I bought was 28.5 cents per round delivered.

Last 300 BLK I loaded was 26 cents per round with pulled bullets

The 300 doesn't make sense unless you reload

First, IMO an AK pistol is just a noisemaker unless you SBR it.
Second, those KV-13s will set you back almost twice what a quality AR will.  And you already own the ARs.  If you're set on going AK, get a couple of O-Paps or Veprs and sink the extra into mags, parts, and ammo.
Third, I will offer this advice: consider sticking with the AR-15 unless you plan to stack AK ammo and spare parts fast and deep, starting right now.  And by "stacking deep" I mean 5,000 rounds per gun (minimum) that you never touch, except in extremis.  5.56 and .308 is not going anywhere, but affordable comblock ammo is always a pen stroke away from extinction.  7.62x39 is domestically produced, if you want to pay double what 5.56 costs per round.

Even if you stick with the 5.56, consider stacking fast and deep.  In your situation, honestly I would probably stick with the ARs and put the money it would take to make the swich into more ammo and/or other areas of concern.

Idk about cheaper...AKs have gotten extremely expensive lately. In a sense they are cheaper because there are not as many accessories.

For base pricing, a colt 6920 is going to be about the same as a SLR107F.

Mags are going to be pretty close.

You win with the ammo costs.

For me guns are never the issue, ammo is.

I like AKs and ARs and I have an ar in 556, soon to have one in 545, and an ak in 545.

End of the day ammo is more expensive than guns if you are doing it right.
