"Make it look used" ? Dude, it's a gun, not toilet paper. You can take it apart without "making it look used". That said, TRH is right. No bolt hold-open on aks. |

Hmmmm...... I called the guy, asking him to check out another SASM7 that he has hanging on the wall. He verified that the bolt did stay open, but explained to me that you have to operate it slowly and carefully to get it to hold open. But that one will stay open, while mine absolutely will not.
ALSO; I have an unfired milled SLR 95 (I bought 5 years ago) The bolt easilly stays open. So, out of 3 new and unfired milled Arsenal rifles, you are saying that two are working improperly, and my SASM7 is the only one that is actually working as designed with the bolt always closing?? |

The only way an AK was designed to have a bolt hold open was when one was incorporated into the magazine. If the bolt happens to stay back otherwise it is a fluke. |

How many AK owners have to tell you there is no bolt hold open on an AK before you trust them?
If you're going to ignore the answers you get, why did you ask here? Just take it to Crusty the FFL and tell him to dremel it until it works the way you want it to. |

+1 on all these guys posts. You asked for advice, you got it. It's up to you where you want to go with it.
I personally don't care whether or not it stays open. If not, good! it's working properly! If yes (like mine), then it makes cease-fires at shooting ranges easier - a tender pulling back on the BC and no need to shove anything into the port to show it's cold. |

My SAM-7 will stay open, as will my brothers SAR1. But when they do it, it is plainly obvious that it isn't part of the design, just something that happens when you ride the bolt forward very slowly.
Your gun is fine man. Its not supposed to stay open. Its just a side effect of riding the action forward so slow that is hangs up on the hammer. |

SOME AK's will have the bolt hold open if you monkey with it and not let the bolt slam shut the way it is supposed to. The hammer is bumping against the bolt and bolt carrier and retarding the forward movement.
The Yugoslavs make magazines that have a special follower that holds the bolt back, but as soon as it's removed the bolt slams forward. AK's ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO LOCK THE BOLT BACK! This ain't your daddy's AR-15.  Your rifle is fine, enjoy it, it's one of the highest quality AK's ever offered. |

When I first bought my old wood stocked Valmet 62, it would hold the bolt open like you describe.
After I racked the bolt about 10 times, it wouldn't do it anymore. It'll go away. If it doesn't, your parts are out of spec. |

My "limited edition" Arsenal SA M-7 Classic bolt won't stay open either! WTF!!??? Hey VaniB, once again the bolt is not supposed to, you have a Top Notch AK. congratulations, rest assured Arsenal makes one hell of an AK!!! I love mine!

I appreciate the input gentlemen.
I don't know most of the members on this forum yet. But, we have all at one time or another run accross the wrong advice, "bad info", or personal conjecture from any one person. Have we not? Unless I come to recognize and trust any one member like Nathan, or Campy, I may not know how valid any one other person's opinion might be. THEREFORE, I like to read a thread of replies to establish a consensus and theme in reaching a sure conclusion. (as was reached here.) When two, three, or four or more people say the same thing, then that's a CONSENSUS! What I have established, here: 1) It seems this "bolt open" is a common enough trait of the AK, that most of you guys here have it or have experienced it. It really threw me off that 2 out of the 3 brand new AK's I checked out had this glitch. I'm glad my expensive piece is the one that actually works! But, though my SLR 95 has this trait, it doesn't seem I need to concern myself with it from what I'm hearing here. 2) There are some really rude and miserable people out there that can't pass up the opportunity to expose their unhappy existance. |

There is no bolt hold open device on an AK. Yugo AKs do have this feature, but like others said above (Templar in particular), that feature is only found on the magazine follower which locks the bolt up after the last round is fired. The hammer on your SLR 95 is slightly over sized. However, if you pull the bolt back all the way and let it fly, I've yet to see an AK that would lock up and not go all the way forward. It's a non-issue like you say. As an aside, my SAR-2 does the same thing with it's Gordon Tech single stage trigger. If it bothers you, get a Red Star Arms trigger.
If you're refering to anybody who posted above, you're dead wrong. We're all in the family here, and we're all smart asses from time to time. Smart ass in a GOOD WAY, because we're only kidding, so relax. themao  Edited to add: I noticed you mentioned something about your FFL making "the gun look used". Please note that it is this board's policy to make our AKs looked used. So right now, you should pull your AKs out of the closet and completely field strip the darn thing. Keep the trigger in, but watch how the bolt and bolt carrier glide over the hammer. You'll see how it can get "locked up" quite easily, and how something out of spec can cause this problem. The "bolt hold" effect of the hammer is quite common in a lot of AKs, but again, it only occurs when you gently let it rest. Drop the buttstock on the ground, and it'll slam forward. |

Although it's not completely true that ALL AKs don't have a BHO device, the Saiga's do. there is a sheet metal piece that must be pushed up to hold it open when you want it to be held open. Here is a pic of mine that I have taken apart during the modification stages to make it a real AK (so to speak) You can see the extra slot next to the trigger hole, the sheet metal and the spring. But thats the only Ak I know of that has this????YMMV

Speaking of AK47s not doing what they are supposed to do, I just took my new gun out today for the first time and I am pissed. It's a Russian WASR10 with a draginoff sniper stock. First, I bought some 30 round clips and they don't even fit! They opening seems WAY too small. Second, I can only make it shoot semi-auto. Now I have seen a lot of movies and tv and I know that AK47s are supposed to be full auto! Can this be fixed easily? I paid good money for this thing. I thought I was getting a good deal at $189 but now I am not so sure. Are there any good gunsmiths out there that can make my gun go Rat-a-tat-tat??

Correct on Saigas with bolt hold opens. Heres one closed up. The square button just in front of the pistol grip sitcking out of the reciever. Works great. You have to pull the bolt back and push the button up, and then ride bolt forward while pushing up till it catches. But its designed in, and will hold it open till you pull the bolt back. Just like a manual hold open should work. And its reliable. Unlike the hammer trick.

Hell i thought for the longest time the Safety Selector, was the bolt hold open. I was trying it on my buddies WASR-10 and sometimes it would hold open and sometimes it wouldn't. I couldn't figure it out, now i feel stupid.

I just recently sold a Chinese 20rnd mag that had a bolt hold open feature on it. It was the mag for the type 63 select fire SKS and later used on the type 86 bullpup. I do not see what the big deal is about a darn bolt hold open. When I am on the range I am not worried about those precious two seconds I lost charging the bolt.

Naaaa.....I was drilling the holes into the receiver of my ARSENAL SASM7 getting ready to install a rail when I realized the underfolder woudn't clear it.... so I stopped. But do you think the drill bit that I broke and remains sticking through the inside of the receiver could be causing the problem?
