with your help, of course

I know I'm not the only one who is fascinated by Soviet era small arms wood. I love collecting as many different variations as possible, and am always amazed at the variety of finishes,..light, dark, red, maroon, brown, orange. So, I'll get it started with a few, and add more later (as soon as I get time to take 'em out of storage and get some nice outdoor shots). In the mean time, please post your pictures here.. full sets, individual pieces, doesn't matter. If you know the time period it's from, feel free to add that or other details to make this a helpful reference. Enjoy...

A row of AKM upper handguards:

Another:

Mid-style (late 60's) AKMS set. (has U-insert instead of forwars tension spring in lower handguard)

Early-mid AKM lower handguard (U-insert, rounded palm swells) beneath later production (more squared swells, forward tension spring)

If Ekie, Chamberlin or anyone else has any corrections as far as info, please chime in! I'm far from being an expert.

My personal favorite. That'll have to wait till tomorrow. I call her "dark and lovely."

If you only knew how true that pattern of sickness sstatement was . Now someone post some pics before I begin to realize what a borderline wierdo I am.

Sweet! I can't believe I'm saying this to another guy, but nice wood, man!

On a side note, anyone know where I can get, or if anyone even makes, a reddish bakelite or poly PG like the above that's a US part?

Does it mean you're normal or I'm a borderline wierdo?

That's a very nice stock set in your photo, one of the nicest I've ever seen.

Really, well I do prefer to sniff mag pouches over stock sets, if that helps?

In all serilousness, sniffing them is a way to tell if they have been refinished or not.. Sometimes Zrectos job is that good..

Yep, original finishes have that distinct smell that like the finish itself is very hard to be imitated.

Is it the finish that smells or the preservative grease?  I assumed that smell was from the grease.

The dark AKMS set are takeoff from the '77 AKMS. Anyone know were I can get a used buttstock that might match this color?

You might want to ask Stott or Tantal...

Got to be the wood or the finish.  Most of the furniture sets I have or had were take offs, no grease.

It's definitely the wood itself, had to sand a bit to fit the upperhandguards to my weapon and the smell became more noticable when I did.

Here's another late AKM set. This set is VERY red when it's in bright sunlight. It smells good, too.:

anyirons,
just got this from rusmilitary.com. Might be what you need. I think they are still in stock (no pun intended). I actually need your handguards BAD  Any interest intrading for some stuff?  I'll buy em outright for $100. Could also trade you a buttstock that might match the set on the right.
