I know these threads are a dime a dozen but I would like some suggestions.

I love my AR but I would like to acquire an AK for my collection. I would like an under-folder in 7.62, wood furniture (lighter preferably), just a shooter.

I know prices go from around $400 for a Century to $1200 and more for a pre-ban Norinco. I don't want a Century and I don't want to pay $1200 for a Norinco. Somewhere in between is what I'm looking at. I'd like something GTG out of the box, reliable and fun to shoot.

Any suggestions?

Also, Any thoughts on this gun? http://www.atlanticfirearms.com/storeproduct751.aspx

Thanks

it's a flip of the coin. that rifle is prolly fine but sight unseen might still be a gamble. prolly be better to buy used, century or not that someone else has worked the bugs out of. or hit a fun show and find a kit build as the one from atlantic that you can inspect first hand. my experience is that factory built rifles, even century imports, seem to function better even though they may have cosmetic issues.

If it's just a shooter you want, check out J&G Sales.  They stock Romanian underfolders (WASR variants) at a very reasonable price.  If I had my druthers, I would choose a Polish PMKMS.

+1.

If you want a "mid-range" underfolder in the $600-$800 range, the Polish PMKMS is one of the finest.  You'll probably have to go to an auction site, as they aren't in stock at many places.

The Vector underfolder (Bulgarian) might also be nice in your price range.

That Yugo linked to in the first post will liklely be nice, but don't expect it to be in stock.  You'd need to call Atlantic to get a lead time, or see if it's available at all.

Do most AKs in that price range have a parkerized finish? I'm not too fond of that.

IIRC, the original Yugo barrels were not chrome lined. That's not a problem is you're not using corrosive ammo or fighting in a swamp.

The fact that the Yugo is NOT a Century made gun is a definite POSITIVE!!

You are right about that (Yugo bbls were not chrome lined) but given a choice between the two, I'd definitely prefer Chrome lined (longer bbl life, easier to clean, resistance to bore damage from environmental conditions and yes, occasional use of Corrosive ammo (Yugo 7.62 x 39 is excellent ammo, but it is corrosive!)
