I'm currently building a Saiga project into basically a shorter version of an AK-105. I'm at the point where I need to get the barrel re-profiled for the 105 gas/sight block combo to fit. While it was on the lathe I was thinking about also turning down the barrel just behind the handguard retainer in order to drop a little extra weight off the front end.

Looking at the krink barrel profile Here, it appears that they turn down the barrel similarly, to .586. The plan was to take down my barrel from it's current .675 diameter to .600. I can't find any blueprints for AK-74 barrels but looking at pictures they also seem to have that low profile weight reduction under the handguards.

I can't think of any negative affects besides heating up little faster but I wanted to get some opinions from others before I go through with the extra weight reduction.

Thoughts?

Here is a pic of what i have going on right now. Rough drawing of its current profile and the intended profile.
