Ive been hearin little small rumors about these being available in the U.S. again . But , they were here and gone before i was old enough to be into guns so could we do a thread about them.
what type of mags do they use, what different calibers are they offered in what type of flashhiders or brakes do they come with, fixed stocks; folders, sights, what was the price like before the ban what is it expected to be when they are back? Thanks in advance Some pictures and links would be great too. |

A little birdie in SIG Law Enforcement has stated that SIG has plans to produce a US built version of the SIG 55X series. Receivers will probably be polymer rather than stamped sheet steel.
Don't look for them this year. world.guns.ru/assault/as25-e.htm www.sig-550.com/ remtek.com/arms/sig/550/550.htm www.sigarms.com/le-military/special.asp www.sigswat.com/ |

Current price is about $12,000 plus for a complete rifle.
You can buy LE uppers for $4,000. |
I am wondering how they are going to do this, as the Sig locking lugs are in the receiver, not in some sort of barrel extention like the AR-15. |
Yuck. Have they started doing this overseas? |
I guess they can sell alot more cheaper polymer guns to compete with the ar15 market. Everytime sig 550s come up everybody complains about the price being about $2000 new if they ever were imported again.
I might buy one if they would make a forged version. I HATE HATE HATE sheet metal (too many metal working classes, I guess), and I'm not sure about polymer rifles, as I have yet to see one that doesn't have problems.
No semiautomatic rifle is. However, I'm sure people will say that, because they are based upon the kalashnikov design, they are infinitely more reliable. From what I hear, these are great guns, but, like all guns, they have their issues.
please say the 12k one has a happy switch on it and that if they come in to the states especially with polymer receivers they will be under 2k i would hope somewhere between 1000 and 1500. I still dont know alot about them but from the looks and the polymer receiver they sound alot like an AR-180. |
"Epsilon" doesn't know what he is talking about. You can buy a semi 550 for $6-8K now that the ban is over. There was a 551 for sale recently for $9K. I'm not sure what he means by "LE uppers". The upper receiver on the 550 series is the "firearm". A couple years ago there were some "repair/replacement" 551 receivers imported, as well as semi-auto parts sets. The receivers were $1000 and the parts sets $2500, but it's not legal to assemble them into Title 1 rifles because of 922(r). US parts are non-existent. Post sample 551/552 machineguns show up on Sturmgewehr.com for about $2500-2800 now and then. SIG normally sells these directly to police agencies though, so these prices are a little inflated since they are "grey market" items. There are no transferable 550's in the US. I am cautiously optimistic about the US 550, and I hope the polymer receivers don't turn out to be true, especially in light of the G36/SL8 receiver cracking problems. |

I have seen one shooter go as low as $4500. And yes they are BASED on the AK47, regardless of what some people think.
Just note that this gun is not BETTER than an AR. It is not worth paying more for it than you would for a comparable AR. If the gun comes, and we can look at it for a reasonable price, that would be SWEET, though.
you are correct but i feel that when i have two AR's already and will probably have three or four by the time it comes out the rarity of the SIG would be worth a little more. More or less becaues its cool and they havnt been available (realisticly) for a while. |
Im saying a LEO will buy a SIG 550 and sell you the upper. At least thats what ive heard and have seen it in magazines. The upper is considered the firearm? Ive never heard of that. I know in some countries the barrel is considered the firearm....and most Hk rifle uppers are considered the firearm and the "lower" is the trigger pack. Is that what your talking about? I dont know that much about the laws regarding the SIG 550 so I could be wrong. |
Right, I mean, it is worth spending extra for novelty or rarity or as a collector’s piece, I’d just hate to see a bunch of people blowing 2K on a gun thinking that it will shoot like some kind of miracle. The price will be high because of reasons other than manufacturing expense. If you buy a basic Sig 500 don’t expect it to shoot like an AR with $1400 worth of enhancements. That is all I meant. |
Sorry but the SIG550 kicks the sh*t out of the AR-15. I'd pay 3X the money to have one. The quality of craftmanship to all the extras make the rifle a piece of art. I've shot one and it puts every 223 rifle to shame. |
I seen a few going for $6300 right at 9/13/04 at one source of mine he had two in great shape.the other one went for G more.
Well, I've shot one, too. That is why I am commenting. And I don't really agree with you. |

Update on the "polymer receiver".
The LOWER receiver is supposed to be polymer, the upper will still be the standard sheet metal of the 550. |
The Sig 550 series is vastly superior to the AR platform. Sorry, that is a fact.

www.biggerhammer.net./sigamt/550/idr550/ The SIG 550 has alot going for it. Sights- Sig + stock night sights! Grip- Sig, FAL/saw style. Trigger- Sig, two stage standard. Trigger guard- Sig, Its cold today and I want to use gloves no problem move the guard over. Stock- Sig, no noise "boing" and you can use it for a bottle opener, also folds out of the way. Receiver- Draw, both two peice constuction Operating system- Sig, never want to clean it, ok. It can handle it like an AK. Gas regulator- Sig, if it does get dirty open it up alittle like an FAL. Mags- Sig, how many do I have? just look. Also link together. Mag change- toss up, one botton for AR one thumb for Sig, but the Sig has the mags linked. Bolt- Both hold open after last round. The only thing that I can give an AR-15 is that its forearm is shielded from heat unlike the Sig, and the barrel have a faster twist rate for higher grain bullets. 1 in 10 vs 1 in 7. |

Right now they are going for 2375 USD in Canada. In your choice of Blue, Black, Classic Green and Red!!!
www.theshootingedge.com/html/retail/Retail_Price_Guide_2004.pdf |
Should be a fair amount under $2K. |
I believe that this is no longer true but the US made parts are expensive since they are not made in large quantities. Here is the link (the build with the kit, receiver and 922r compliant parts runs $4.5K): www.sig552.com/ |

I agree. Out of the box, Sig. Hands down.
I just feel that the AR has more potential. The AR-15 can become a very, very nice rifle, unmatched in accuracy and recoil. Also, it is significantly more versatile. |
This week or last week I saw one on Sturm for around 7500, it was sweet.
If they make it polymer, they can keep it I'd personally like an arsenal AK for now.... but I would need advice on that one, hint hint Templar Sig, good gun no matter what |
The problem with the Sig 550 is that Swiss arms dosn't have the capacity to produce them in large numbers needed, was reading over on the canada gun nutz site that they can only make ~80 rifles a day and have big contracts with Middle Eastern countries. So the PE90 are not making it to Canada. I would love to have a red and blue rifle.... to go with the black and green ones I'd be forced to get. That being said I do beleive that they can be made for $2000. Still ouch.
They are nice rifles but even when I paid $1500 for one, it was over priced. Sometimes you just have to view these things as potential investments - meaning it's nice to buy something, shoot it, take care of it, then sell it for more than you paid for it.
I think that is the Speshul Wepuns SIG site aka "Tactical Weapons Training Academy", they put up a bunch of ads in Shotgun News claiming they would have SIG's for sale. They haven't actually produced anyting other than hot air. |
Yes, really. The guy selling that 550 is on crack. The 550 sniper doesn't count, there were only like 2 or 5 imported, I can't remember for sure. Vollmer's sold 2 550's after the ban, one for $6295 and one NIB for $7295. www.fjvollmer.com/assault.htm 551 on Biggerhammer, $9000, plus a 550 for $7900. Both within the last two months. www.biggerhammer.net/sigamt/wwwboard/ |
There were 1/7 SIG's available. 550-1SP is 1/10, 550-2SP is 1/7, same way for the 551. |
Please also note that if he truly has a SIG 550 Sniper for sale, that it's price doesn't get to be considered in the price for SIG 550 rifles/carbines. 550 Snipers cost more, period. |
What magazines did you see this in? What LEO would buy a SIG (on department letterhead) and then ILLEGALLY sell it to you? Yes, on a 550 the "upper" is the firearm according to ATF. As far as I can tell the only reason for this is because on the original 550 imports, the serial # is stamped there. The lower holds the stock, trigger group, and magazine, just like an AR. It would be cool if the lower was the firearm, then you could swap between a 550, 551, 552 instantly. |
STILL WANT METAL, KTHX, BAI. |
Tag... just in case this ever come to fruition. |
Polymer lower or steel lower, I'll still buy one. And if Sig is going to make it a polymer lower, then I trust them to do it well.
Bring on the US-made 55x series of rifles! Josh |
Possibly by SHOT Show 2006..................... And you might want to be on the look out for something coming out of Austria too........in 5.56mm.....................................from a company well known for damn near indestructable side arms who so far have not ventured into long guns............. |
I love Glocks, actually have 2 of 'em, but if their rifles look like their handguns then I'd rather have an FN-F2000 or some other kind of ugly shit.
Glocks are great, but let's hope that they have a "Queer Eye" design consultant |
And maybe have somebody without square hands design the grip. Just a thought. My hands are cramping up just thinking about it...
+1 i think SIG is competent enough to handle it. |
If they are as economical and reliable as the Glocks that would be nice keep us updated templar. |
I'd prefer steel but Polymer seems to be the wave of the future. Aug, G36, XM8 are all doing the polymer thing so if the Army like the XM8 which is a polymer gun, I'd give it a try. Also it should help on the cost side of things. |
