My computer pretty much commited suicide recently so I have been unable to post about my new SAR1. I must say I feel I got a lot of bang for my buck. The rifle I got is 2002 model and seems to be a vast improvement in quality over the older ones I've seen and handled in gunshops and at gunshows. The finish, while not exactly excellent, is not too bad, and looks pretty good after you rub some non-drying oil into it. The wood is a very nice burned-orange instead of the puke-brown I expected and it even has properly aligned sights. Anyway, enough about that...
My actual question is about Russian AKs. In most of the photos I have seen, Russian made AKs seem to have a shinier black finish, which looks more like bluing then any of the other European AKs I have seen. What do they normally use? Is it bluing?
Also: What do the ported gas-tubes do for an AK?
And: what's the deal with bolt-carrier compatability? which bolt carriers commonly available will fit a SAR1?
