I want to get the correct type of muzzle break for my SAR-2 rifle...and I want to install it...preferably by welding.  NYS law is fuzzy when it comes to threaded barrels, if I did so even by explaining it id probally end up in jail for a day or so until they realized it was legal (no threaded barrels here that can support flash hiders/silencers).

Please link me to a website that sells SAR-2 / Romanian AK74 type muzzlebreaks already BLUED (not in the white).

thanks

I don't know of anyone off the top of my head that has any in stock right now.  The cycle seems to be that when the sight bases are available, the brakes are not, and vice versa.

I got mine(along with the necessary front sight base) from KVAR-however, they no longer show them on the website.

You can buy a reproduction Romanian 22mm muzzle brake from the people at www.ak-103.com that is chromed inside just like the original. You need to call to place your order. It is $60.00 plus shipping. And K-Var sells the proper front sight base. You will also need a few little pins and springs, though I suppose you can just skip them if you're going to weld the brake to the FSB. But don't forget new pins for fastening your new FSB to the barrel.

wait...do I need a new front site base if I just plan on welding the thing to it?  also do these come "in the white" or already blued so I dont have to do that myself?

22mm removable brakes were specifically ALLOWED by the BATFE during the AWB because there were/are no silencers or flash hiders available in that size. So do yourself a favor and research it before welding on the brake because you just might not have to.

i havea  letter from the BATF cheif, that was in reply to some guys email...it basically gave the OK to threading for the romanian rifles because as you said they cant "readily accept" flash hiders or silencers....is this true of all romanian rifles or just the SAR-2 type series?  i think getting it threaded would be more a task wouldnt it?

I threaded both my SAR 2's and used a 1/2X28 to 22mm adapter and it took me about five minutes to do it. I still have the threading kit with the die and thread alignment tool and would be happy to do it for you or loan you the tools. It's not hard at all.

how are you going to install it?

would I be able to just simple order that, and slip it on...then weld it?

Also the fact that the threading is part of the FSB and not a threaded barrel had an influence in BATFE's ruling about the Romanian 22mm brakes.

You need to get a 1/2X22mm adapter from Investment Grade Firearms. Also look into Jayson doing the work for you if you want as it might be easier then you doing it yourself. Otherwise, let me know and I can work something out with the tools. Jim

man so itd cost me $55 for him to install the part, + shipping...then another like $70 for the break itself?  that adds up.  Is there anyway to just weld it on?  itd be $60 or so cheaper

So I noticed the End of the Barrel on my 2000 SAR-1 necks down Really small right at the end of the barrel where you would screw on the muzzle brake.....

Is this the reason I need an adapter to mount standard sized muzzle brakes?

Does anyone sell the adapter separate?

I think I could have my barrel threaded locally cheaper than the shipping to get my rifle to wherever and back.

I looked at investment grade firearms and they only show the service but not the part separate.

Wheres the best place to get the adapter to go from the Puny SAR-1 Barrel tip to a normal threading so I can play with a muzzle brake?

people here wont even thread the barrel, reason being they dont want to touch something that may potentially be illegal (IN THEIR MIND).

If you can find the FSB (part 167 thru K-VAR IIRC) all you do is cut off/ knock out pins in old FSB and remove old FSB. Then using a rubber mallet replace with new FSB (check ocassionally to be sure it is going on straight) while beating FSB down on barrel after liberally oiling barrel. There is a step on barrel so you will know when then new FSB is fully seated. The way i check for straightness is to lightly scribe barrel with a v mark as well as center of FSB close to where barrel scribe will match with FSB scribe (eyed it for most part knowing which way old FSB canted and playing with the old FSB after cutting out pins with Dremel). The old FSB moved around freely on barrel after cuts were made in old FSB to remove pins. You will be able to get very good idea of a centered positon for new FSB. After the new FSB is on it is best to use a drill press to drill the new holes in FSB and then hammer in pins to keep FSB from rotating or backing out. Will see if I can find the directions that used to be on AK47.net. With the proper FSB you will not need to thread the barrel for a correct sized 22mm comp.

thanks a bunch Kihn....is there any way to just simply straight up soder/weld the break on without changing out the FSB?

Dieter,

Here is the tutorial on replacing FSB. Look over the site and may have something for you for the welding (there are minimun requirements to satisfy BATFE reqs):

http://www.gunsnet.net/Linx310/threadinstall.htm

just in case here is the part for FSB from K-VAR:

Will that FSB fit the SAR-1 as well?

Or only the SAR-2?

It says for AK74...

That FSB looks cool.

Kihn...could I just take one of the Romy muzzle breaks and weld it onto my bare muzzle?

Don't know how myself. Should see about the slip ons with pinning. The 167 isn't really that hard to do if you already have the comp and a dremel.  if so then at the most you would have to take it to a machine shop to have the two holes drilled (see tutorial for bit size).
