Went to the gun range today and I was the only one there so I thought I would have a little fun with my SGL21. I fired 545 rounds through it with just enough time to slap in a new mag and did some runnin' and gunnin'. Needless to say she got a little hot and dirty. Not one malfunction of any kind using Wolf FMJ and hollow points. Damn was it fun

You threw it down the driveway didn't you?

Glad you enjoyed yourself!  I am so lucky to have private land to shoot on; I get to run drills to my hearts content and not worry what any Fudd thinks of me moving and double tapping.

Are those scratches on an arsenal? Oh noes!

Looks awesome!  I don't mind the scratches on my arsenal either lol.  It can always be refinished.

Bwahahaha... Actual driveway scrapage!  Awesome.

So did you literally just run all that ammo through it that quickly,  without any decent "cooldown" time in between? The reason I ask isn't because I doubt you in any way, but because it just got me thinking about getting my AK's hot. Like REALLY hot, doing the exact same thing.

I've always been curious what the safe boundaries are with this. I've gotten a couple of  mine hot enough to melt the ends of the polymer hand guards before, seemingly with no "ill effects" afterward.

Think I'm going to go start a thread on this.

Nice rifle BTW.
I have an SGL-21 on "lay-away" at the dealer right now. Need to go grab it up and start abusing it too.

Better not tell that douchebag who put 300 rounds through his AK and then "had the proof" that Arsenal AKs are sub-par

Or the guy on YouTube who was bumpfiring the hell out of his SGL until he melted the handguards.  He was funny.  He was too cowardly to even allow my comment to post on his channel.

Yeah, pretty much. I would fire through a mag and pop it out and pop in a new one. I did smell plastic burning, so I may have melted the handguards a little. I was pretending I was killing zombies

are there better hand guards that don't heat up or is their someway to stop it?

Well I just field stripped the rifle and removed the hand guards and saw no evidence of melted plastic. So that's good.

Ya all the newer ones like that come with a stainless steel liner in the hand guard that makes them much better at deflecting the heat.

I can definitely see the need for laying the lead with the zombies. Them fuckers would gladly take your new AK AND eat yer brain...

I removed the plastic crap and went all wood.  Never looked back.  Heat?  What heat?  Wood insulates much better and looks a whole lot nicer to my eye as well.

I can't say for sure that you can use "ANY wood ak forearm".  I have a Romanian AK and used surplus Romanian wood.  You may have to do a little hand fitting of the wood, but that's to be expected when installing any stock.  Possibly a little minor filing/sanding may be required, but that's about it.  As far as putting Romanian wood on a Bulgarian AK, or some cross-country variation like that, I just don't know, because I haven't done it.  Hopefully someone with more experience doing this will answer.

OK lets get real here. I never had the "plastic crap" as you describe BUT after more than 300 rounds (just my WAG)  the wood on my beloved WASR gets so dang hot I can't hold on. I just made some heat shields and hopefully this improves the problem.

I think the comment "What heat?" is...ahhh...well... a little misleading. You'll burn the Sh!% out of your hands even with the wood after you shoot enough rounds...and we all hopefully love to shoot a lot of rounds through them right?

IMO all rifles need to be well cared for, kept clean and well respected. But scratches on an AK are kinda like battle scars. These aren't barbie dolls. They are tough machines.

In summary: Pretty AK's  = Wussies need not apply, and if you have wood in lieu of plastic your hand will still burn.
