Hi guys, I'm thinking of getting an M76 and wondered about the build quality. I've read the earlier threads on here about out of spec receivers, is that still an issue?

Thanks in advance for any info.

After 10 months and 800+ rounds, mine has been very good.  The action was a little tight upon receipt, but everything wore in during the first 200 rounds or so and it has proven itself to be an accurate and reliable rifle.  Very glad to have it, it's easily one of my favorite rifles.  I would much rather have a M76 than a PSL, I prefer the 8mm cartridge and the M76 is twice the rifle the PSL is IMO.  It justifies the price difference in my mind.

There have been reports of problems, many (but not all) are ammo related, these rifles will not function with every 8mm out there.  I wouldn't say they are overly picky, but you can't find the oldest, nastiest 8mm surplus out there and expect it to be all good.  Mine runs fine on '70s Romy surplus, commercial Prvi, and M75 (all I've tried so far).

I've read a couple of reports of mags sitting too low in the receiver as well.  As is usually the case on gun forums, the problem rifles get all the attention and people tend to ignore the many people like myself who have no issues at all.

I've added a Harris bipod, my own semi-custom Picatinny scope mount, 10x40 Bushnell scope, ITC cheekrest, and RSA trigger to mine.  I really enjoy the rifle and consider it money well spent.

Thank you sir for your concise, no nonsense post.

I'm not sure what I'll actually get at this point but the M76 is at the top of the list. I have a well built PSL and thought the M76 would be a nice companion for it.

M76 and a PSL would make a really nice pair.  Sort of like having a Garand and an M1A.  Or a 1903A3 and a 1917 Enfield in 30-06, I could go on, but you get the point...nice pair.

Quick question: Is the barrel on the M76 chrome lined?
If I recall most Yugos are not
Thanks.

No they are not. All of the new M76 have Green Mountain (US) barrels.

Stupid question probably, but is there any other manufacturers option on purchasing an M76 other than from Century?? I am planning to pick one up sometime in the next few months, and I am really not a big fan of Century products. I had intended to build one from one of the full kits that Ohio Rapid Fire was offering a few months back, but he died before I was able to fund the build. They had them for $780.00 for the full unissued parts kit, new receiver, new Green Mountain barrel, ZRAK scope & cover, sling and 2 magazines. Say $800.00 with shipping. That was one helluva deal. They had even serialized the new receivers to the parts kit so that everything would match. I wonder whats going to happen to the 300+ kits that are still there in the wharehouse?? Oh well, for now I'll play with my PSL.

PM Sent.

Also, the guy that did a LOT of ORF’s M76 builds, Tim Foreman of Gewehr Werks, may know where some are hiding out.  He’s building my kit as well as 4-5 others that originally came from ORF.  Also, I read on some other forum that some folks were able to buy heaps of ORF’s stuff for pennies on the dollar.  Can’t speak for accuracy nor if/when/where any of it may turn up.

Wiselite seems to be outta business or down-scaled to the point of not having a website anymore.  They did have a couple hundred Patterson receivers build last spring and I bought one. These receivers ARE still being sold now at  http://www.weaponeer.net/productcart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=305&idcategory=49#details

I have a (2nd) Century M76.  I had to exchange the 1st one and this one is still occasionally unreliable to cycle.  Tim said he’d be glad to “debug” it.  Bugged or debugged, either way, I plan on selling it.

Hope this helps.
