Just curious. Why does the pin slot on the slant brake orient it at an angle rather than being square to x-y when viewed from the muzzle end?

the slant compensator is installed at an angle to counteract the torque force developed, in full auto fire mode, by the right hand twist rifling.

I also have read that the slant brake works as an effective flash suppressor even though the BATF say it's a muzzle brake. Is there any truth to this?

No, it is just a slab on one corner of the muzzle.

there are several companies that sell usa made slant comps.

also, if you add one more usa made part you cam legally install an imported slant comp.

after threading you bbl. 14mm x 1mm left hand to accept the slant comp, you must weld, silver solder or blind pin the comp in place per batfe regulations.
