Just curious.  Why does the pin slot on the slant brake orient it at an angle rather than being square to x-y when viewed from the muzzle end?

I also have read that the slant brake works as an effective flash suppressor even though the BATF say it's a muzzle brake.  Is there any truth to this?

No, it is just a slab on one corner of the muzzle.
