Other than weight I dont see a lot of reasons to choose a 40 round mag over a drum

drums cuz the libs will shit their pant when they see it
  really i want a drum i havent got one yet or used one but i do own 1 40 round mag and love it but a drum is at least another 30round mag plus 5 more  thats at least one relaod you wont have to do

Every ak owner should have a drum, i prefer the chinese but i have both, to go shooting the chinese rocks cuz u can load them much faster, i do have about ten 40 rounders though and i love them. I like it cuz two boxes of ammo will load one mag.

I have only 5 fourty rounders right now and the reason for that being: 5 fourty round magazines costs less that 1 75 round drum. I just taped two magazines together.

I have a 40rnd mag that I like, but I admit a Chinese 75 drum is incredibly useful. I'm still kicking myself for not laying out the money at the last gun show: $80 for a not new but nice looking Chinese. I had the money in my pocket, but rather than just getting it, I wanted to contemplate. By the time I finished contemplating, I was too late.
  40s are nice because they are relatively cheap. 75s are way cool, and as long as you aren't moving a huge amount, they are pretty practical.

Don't 40's get in the way shooting from the prone position?
I trued shooting prone with 30's and it just works. No height to spare though. Seems to me the drum is more compact that way. |

There was an $80 drum mag at the last gun show?! I must have missed it at the show or else I'd have jumped on it. I'm just thinking about this because, like you said, 40 round mags can be found at great prices right now. A drum mag, on the other hand, has the huge cool factor. What more, the drum mag would really shine if you're shooting from prone. |

You obviously don't own a drum. The drum has a cammed lever on the front (the Russian/Romanian version) that tensions the spring a little more every time you press it. You push in a round on top, work the lever, and continue that process until it is loaded. It is actually more difficult to load a 40 rounder than a drum, as the drum has a light, constant srping pressure when laoding, the 40 rounder gets harder as you go. Beyond weight and being a bit wider than a mag, the drum is better than a 40 rounder...the 40 rounder hangs waay down there, the drum really isn't much longer than a 20 rounder. [ETA] The drum fits a lot better on your belt than a 40 rounder...in fact, many of the drum pouches are designed to be removed form belt and the drum inserted while still "wearing" the pouch. Very, very nifty design. And try using a 40 rounder form the prone position! |

Do the math, 75>40. Drums have always been cooler than mags. come on now, who is 'gonna carrry these things further than from the car to to the bench. Heck, I tote mne about 10 feet before I start blasting at my buddy's private range.

A drum is alot louder than a mag. If you doubt this, load a drum to capacity, and load a 40 round mag to capacity; then, run with each. Your adversary will hear you coming a lot sooner if you are using a drum--assuming of course that you are trying to be stealthyhinking.gif

Chinese drums work great, but rattle like a bag of marbles. If all you need is volume at a mg shoot, 40s are way cheaper. For overall handling, I actually prefer 30s.

Get a little of everything. Then see what you like the most. Start out with some thirtys, then fortys then drums. Everyone has there own personal preference. I myself like to shoot fortys out of my fixed stock aks. With underfolders I shoot thirtys so I can fold it up.

I said I would never own an AK-47. Imagine that! I now have two being built, so I am not going to say anything about the drum. I agree with spartan28 in that I like 40s in my fixed and 30s in the folder.Mikie

I prefer mags. but don't own a 40 rd. though. The 100 rd. throws my shooting off due to having to raise my left arm up more to make room for the drum.
Real world situation; if attacking would want the drum but for normal use would go with mags. Gun range; If going to do some shooting mags., if wanting to impress people guess would go with drum. Bumping probably drum although I never have done it. |

I thought that wasn't supposed to be an issue. Springs don't lose their "spring" because they're under tension. Isn't it the act of compressing and releasing, more compressing and more releasing, etc., that causes a spring to wear out? |

There is no reason to own a drum. It will just turn your firearm into a bullet hose and it has no sporting purpose what-so-ever.
