Anyone know the serial number range for preban Yugos?

I don't have the number range, but the markings will tell you everything.

If the rifle is marked AK-47 or RPK, then it is a pre '89 Import Ban rifle.

If it has had the model # electro pencilled out and M-90 electro pencilled in, then it is post ban.

Thanks, Templar.  I guess what I'm really wondering about is whether there's any way to tell when the gun got out of customs.  For instance, a gun that was in transport when the import ban went into effect could have been stripped of its evil features, released from customs, and then put back the way it was.  I believe there was a brief window when all this could have been done legally.  I'm trying to figure out if there's any way to find out whether this happened with any particular gun.  

The rifles that were released from Customs after the ban took effect are the M90's.  They have the original marking (either AK-47 or RPK) electropencilled out and M90 elecropencilled in over top of the old model designation.

I have one of the M90s described above.  Full preban wood, very beautiful.  The bayo lug feature does not seem to be present but it does not look like it was taken off since the finish looks factory.  The rifle has illuminated inserts in the front & rear sights.  The overall length is longer than my Polytech Legend, it is bigger and heavier but better fit for a long armed person like myself.  It is a very fine rifle.  I just wish it had a chrome lined barrel.  Just have to keep it clean.

I've also found that because the rifles are not chrome lined, they tend to out shoot other AK's.  Could also be the quality of the rifle and too.

The AK's in 7.62x51mm are very accurate also, easily keeping up with a quality FAL in the accuracy department.

There are NO post-1994 AWB Yugos!

The only Yugos are either pre-ban or post-[b]IMPORT[/b] ban Yugos.

Just as there are no 'post-AWB ban' Galils or Valmets.

Right you are, Hun.  But I think there's something missing from this analysis.

The problem that I see is that the gun had to be in a pre-ban configuration when the '94 ban went into effect in order for it to be grandfathered.  And the problem with that is that proof that the gun was grandfathered is an affirmative defense.  

For any non-lawyers, who may be reading this, that means that it's the owner has the burden to prove that the gun was in an assault weapon configuration in 1994.  

With a pre-89 ban gun, I don't see that as a problem.  But a post-89 gun would not have been in a pre-94 ban configuration when released from customs, which means that it was either illegally converted (good luck at proving when) or it was legally converted before Congress made it illegal to convert post-89 imports back to their original configuration.

Am I missing something?

Yes there are the pre-89 import ban weapons and the pre-94 weapons. The pre-94s are grandfathered if they were owned before 9/13/94, and your receipt proves it! If you own a AK MAK 90 now,that has no improvement features it appears that the statute of limit has run out on the weapon. It has become a post 94 firearm. You can check with the ATF but I suspect they'll tell you the same thing.

Actually, I did check with the ATF.  I got a mostly non-responsive answer that didn't really tell me anything I didn't already know.

American Arms pre-89 import. I got the stuff to make it real again, semi of course.

If you go back there, bring me back a M-70B grenade launcher sight ladder and I'll give you $50 for it. Mine has a crack on the right side and I can't get it fixed. Tried welding and it didn't hold.

I've had an eye for the Yugo AK's for quite some time. I finally broke down and picked up a Yugo SKS, when they weren't available I lusted for one and after they hit the market I had other interests...

Unless I run into one I can't pass up, It will be some time before I've got a Yugoslavian AK. I must have one though!

    I had a Yugo underfolder AK that ended up being a causualty of divorse.  I loved the way it shot and the cool features that are unique on Yugo AK's...
    Does anyone know where theres and underfolder Yugo for sale?  What is a fair price for one these days?  I hope that the price may come down just a little since the ban is dead, but maybe it doesn't really matter.
    I lost a lot of guns when I got divorsed, and this is the one that is hardest to replace!

As far as I know ALL post ban Yugoslavians do not need to have US Compliance parts.  All of the M-90 re-marked AK-47s were in this country well before November 30, 1990.

Sec. 178.39 Assembly of semiautomatic rifles or shotguns.

(a) No person shall assemble a semiautomatic rifle or any shotgun
using more than 10 of the imported parts listed in paragraph (c) of this
section if the assembled firearm is prohibited from importation under
section 925(d)(3) as not being particularly suitable for or readily
adaptable to sporting purposes.

(b) The provisions of this section shall not apply to:

(1) The assembly of such rifle or shotgun for sale or distribution
by a licensed manufacturer to the United States or any department or
agency thereof or to any State or any department, agency, or political
subdivision thereof; or

(2) The assembly of such rifle or shotgun for the purposes of
testing or experimentation authorized by the Director under the
provisions of Sec. 178.151; or

(3) The repair of any rifle or shotgun which had been imported into
or assembled in the United States prior to November 30, 1990, or the
replacement of any part of such firearm.

(c) For purposes of this section, the term imported parts are:

(1) Frames, receivers, receiver castings, forgings or stampings
(2) Barrels
(3) Barrel extensions
(4) Mounting blocks (trunions)
(5) Muzzle attachments
(6) Bolts
(7) Bolt carriers
(8) Operating rods
(9) Gas pistons
(10) Trigger housings
(11) Triggers
(12) Hammers
(13) Sears
(14) Disconnectors
(15) Buttstocks
(16) Pistol grips
(17) Forearms, handguards
(18) Magazine bodies
(19) Followers
(20) Floorplates


Any firearm imported prior to November 30, 2000 but after 1989 could be freely converted back to full military configuration without US compliance parts.

You seem to be completely up to date on your weapons!, Its allways nice to meet someone like you. Im not new to this site, I have just never posted before. My ? is, Im looking for a few things. First off a carrying handle for my Valmet M-78, This rifle is brand new with two original mags but someone has taken the carry handle off, and probably tossed it in the trash back in the 80s!, I have 600.00 in the rifle, traded a Browning Shotgun for it!. Next I just bought, yesterday,a new unfired Preban Yugoslavian M-77 .308 with the original ZRAK scope, Orig sling, bayo and two mags plus the factory manuals for the rifle and the scope, there is one like it on Gunbroker now at 1900.00 starting with a reserve of ?, no scope and some were on the rifle. I am looking for two more mags for it, I LOVE the Yugo Guns!!, And I have the following,
