After I get my first AK-47 for Christmas I am going to load up on ammo and I a goin to order a 1000 rounds of Wolf 7.62x39mm ammo. And was wondering what has higher penetration? Full Metal Jacket or Soft Point? There was also Hollow Point but I know that doesn't have as much penetration as the other two because it mushrooms. Anyway which has a higher tendency to penetrate the target? FMJ or Soft Point. Just curious.

A hit is a hit. 7.62x39 ammo is not sissy .223! It hits hard... It doesnt matter if its soft point, HP or FMJ. I know that If I hit soft tissue with my AK-47 it will knock it down!
Buy whatever is the cheapest, plus... You will use it for plinking right?

By all reports FMJ and HP act the same. All the HP ammo I have is steel jacketed and I don't expect it will expand. Some posters report expansion (and presumably less penetration) from SP ammo. If you want the best penetration get the Chinese steel core ammo.

I did some steel penetration experiments early this year with Brown Bear HP, SP and FMJ out of a Yugo SKS. All would penetrate 5/16 plate and none would penetrate 3/8 plate. They would splatter off 1 3/8 tool bar steel without making any indentation.
