If you read on my frustration under the general AK discussion, you will see the issues I have had since SATURDAY trying to install this freakin bullet guide...Still going on too...

* Broke 2 taps, went through 5 total, it was eating the teeth before it even started to tap. {Lowes Kolbolt taps} And YES, I know how to use the tool!!

*Now trying the nut/bolt approach with a tab of JB weld to secure it...NO go....my fucking battery's won't hold a charge to drill the hole a bit bigger for the bolt to go through.

This $25 & 15 min. job has now cost me around $60ish , it's Monday and still isn't installed......WTF?!!!

I swear either god doesn't want this thing done or I'm a fucking idiot and need to give all my tools away and give up my man card......

Was my fucking receiver made from the armor of a russian tank? DO I need a NASA issued Nuclear drill bit that has been blessed by the Pope?
Now I'm scared to ever try the trigger change....

I broke a tap on mine, very similar to how you did. Punched it out, redrilled and used a bigger tap and screw. Perhaps you should think about having it welded in place. Some builders use this method.

Thanks for the reply..I just HAD to vent AGAIN..lol
This is some space ninja, special forces steel
I REALLY though after reading up that it would be a 10 min. ordeal.....I'm not going to give up yet.
I'm going up in size on the bit {just broke one AGAIN} and using a longer 6/32 with a bolt. AND I will also add a dab of JB weld to secure it all in place. Just have to get ANOTHER drill bit. I've been using Lowes Kolbolt crap since they are the closest to me....I may stop in Home Depot on the way home from work to see what they have.

You should have bought the Dinzag bullet guide kit and saved yourself the headache.  The cobalt (not Kobalt) bit he includes cuts through the trunnion like butter.  My old-ass Black & Decker 7.2v Versapack drill had no trouble at all.  The tap he includes is also high quality and won't break as long as you use lube, go slow, back out every 1/4 turn of cutting, and DON'T FLEX THE TAP.

Some guys find chucking the tap in a drill press helpful, as it keeps the tap exactly lined up with the hole you drilled.

+1 to GT's comments, I did 3 bullet guides the same day using Dinzag's kit and a hand drill, was done with all 3 in about 30 minutes. It definately seemed like the cobalt bit went through easily and I remember thinking that it wasn't as hard as people made it out to be, so it seems like the quality of the tap might be the key factor. On the other hand I had a similar experience trying to drill through the trigger guard spot weld...I also thought it was made out of some funky Roswell/Area 51 alloy because the drill bits I had just would not cut into it

I did my 5.45 Saiga's BG on Sunday and I used the Dinzag kit. Using a corded power-drill, the cobalt drill bit cut right through the trunnion with ease at a low RPM, and I used a hand-tap with the HSS tap from the Dinzag kit. I went slow and backed it off frequently and used tapping fluid. I had no issues.

Maybe I should have used Dinzag....I went to their page originally, but the cred. card order page was down so I jumped over to Carolina shooters site and ordered.....not knocking them, but I wonder what type bits they have.
I had to order that day, before the wife got home

Yeah, I've read that you shouldn't use the Kobalt taps, but the Cobalt ones as that steel is extremely hard.  I just used the one that came with the Dinzag pack and it went through like butter.

Yeah I finally bought one at ACE hardware, drilled it with a 9/64 so the the 6/32 screw could insert. I used a 1/2 screw, with a locking nut, Thread lock, and added a DAB of JB weld where the guide slips under the barrel. After 24 hours I cycled both AK mags without a hickup!!  I'm good to go!!

Wat what?  Hey...it works, and seems to hold tight. I'm taking her to the range Sat. to fire a few hundred rounds through her...I'll report back with results.

I was just trying to clarify, you have 2, i.e both magazines for your ak? That is a Wat. Procure more ammunition feeding devices now!

I went with Dinzag's kit when I installed mine.  No problems with the installation (though the steel sure was hard) and no problems feeding rounds either, so far.
