I've had a few people IM me with questions on how I do my rivets and what tools I use. Well I'm sure there are plenty of you out there that already know how to do rivets and there's more than one way. I'm going to focus on the way that works best for me. Bare with me I'm not a writer I'm more of a hands on kinda guy. I hope it makes sense. First off Get a pair of 24" bolt cutters. You will have to modify them. I used an air grinder to do this.(wear eye protection) The first pair I bought were crap, they broke. Don't buy the pair like the ones on the left. It's best to take them apart to do the cutting.
Next is a photo of my home made trigger guard jig.
I welded this up at work. It's 1/2 steel stock.
(trigger guard jig) I drilled corrasponding holes for the rivets,(9/32 I think) but I wasn't happy with the out come. The rivets wouldn't sit flush and they had half moon cuts in them. Totally unsatisfactory. So I turned the thing around and used the flat surface to support the rivets. If you have an airhammer you can use this to smash the rivets. If not a hammer and punch work fine. Yes they my have a slight flat spot on the rivet head, but it works fine for me. I always cut a little bit off the length of my rivets because they seem too long. ( your's may vary).
Here's how I do the front trunnion. I have divets drilled in the metal stock that you see in the vice. (9/32)
I've found that to do the rear rivets a strong vise will work. I place a metal square with divet drilled in it. Place the diveted metal on the side with the rivet head. Then a flat peice of metal on the side to be smashed. Crank down on the vice, the rivet will start to flatten out. Once this starts to happen place another diveted peice of metal on that side to start forming the contour of rivet head.
