Newbie Q again:

What's up with the 14mm threading on some AKs? Seems like the "standard" is 24mm.

Is 14mm a problem to avoid or something else??

Thanks,

Standard thread for 7.62 x 39 is 14mm left hand.

For the 5.45 X 39 AK74 the front sight base has a 24mm right hand thread (Russian and Bulgarian).  Romanian 5.45x39 has a 22mm thread.

Much of the AK100 series has the 24mm FSB for the 7.62x39 rifles as well as 5.45 and 5.56.

I'm not sure, but I think the 24mm thread began with the birth of the AK-74

The larger diameter thread was used to support the much larger, heavier 74 brake.
