I am curious too, I thought of getting some brass ammo that I could save to reload later (haven't started reloading yet but understand that I probably will later) but was concerned I couldn't get the right bullets. My problem is backwards though, .308 through .311.

Yes.
Ruger pulled a trick with the throating to enable them to shoot .311" bullets safely. |

So do you think I would be safe running .311 down a .308 tube? I would cut the chamber with a 7.62x39 reamer.

I shot mine with Chnese steel core surplus ammo.. No problems, other than I was young and did'nt know what I was doing, and the corrosive ammo rusted the bolt shut..hehe

Cutting a normal 7.62x39 chamber/throat in a .308 barrel will not get you the same trick that Ruger used in their Mini-30. You'd have to talk to the gunsmith to see if he can duplicate Ruger's .311-to-.308 throat. If not, then you are limited to using 308 bullets and reloading. |

Ruger Mini 30's are NOT .308. A call to Ruger will reveal that they are in fact .310-.311.

Maybe now but when they first came out, they were .308 on the bore and only Federal ammo 7.62x39 with a .308 bullet dia could safely be shot through them. Always felt the mini-30 was a bad concept with very few good mags to support it. Hootbro |

There are two different varieties of 8mm Mauser, I believe they're called the "J" and "SJ" bores. One is .318", the other is .323". The .323" ammo can be fired through a barrel with the ..318" bore (and vice versa), so I would imagine that the difference between .308 and .311" bores would not be as significant.

Where do you get this information? Any 7.63x39 ammo that meets specs is safe to shoot in a Mini-30, and has been since its introduction. |

An interesting argument...
I have a Guardia Civil - one of the small ring Spanish Mausers that came in in 308. Didn't like the idea of shooting 308 in a small ring Mauser. So, I used a 308 to 7.62x39 chamber insert to convert it. Saddly, the rifle works very well :) I guess no one told it that a .311 diameter bullet in a .308 diameter bore was a bad idea :) No one told the chamber insert company either :) Nope - no barrel bulging, hot gases, famine, or pestilence... everything just works :) |

I managed to shoot wolf in a mini-30 without hurting myself. The rifle was an unreliable pos.
FWIW, Federal 7.62 is pretty good on whitetail at short range. |

Maybe "unsafe" is the wrong term. One of my co-workers has a early 1987 MINI-30 and it was unreliabile in terms of extraction when using anything steel cased. The only thing that would work was .308 dia. Federal Brass ammo in 7.62x39. I slugged the bore and it came out to .308 when I measure it. My understanding is that Ruger just did a swage trick on the chamber to allow the .311 stuff to work. I would speculate ruger would not admit to when or what serial number range they did this. Ruger changed their spec to a .311 on the Mini 30 because they were getting warranty complaints from people wearing out their barrels too fast. I was not aware of the 8mm Mauser J and SJ issues but there are some rifles where as little as a .003 difference can cause problems. The M-14 is one of them.

Wrong! You can easily blow up an old commision Mauser firing .323 military ammo in it(When they switched to the newer Spitzer bullet around 1905 they switched to the .323 diameter bullet). The .318 bore often had the throat reamed out a bit more to squeeze the later .323 bullet to fit down the .318. However, it is still considered VERY unsafe and VERY stupid to fire military 8mm with a .323 bullet in a .318 bore. Generates much higher pressure than the action can handle. Most(if not all) the military surplus out there is a .323 Spitzer bullet. ETA: Not saying you could hurt a Ruger, just want to prevent a possible Darwin award. Remember, the vast majority of .318 J Mausers are at 100 years old or OLDER. |
