Having completed a late '70s parkerized Rommy, I am now ready to srtart myBulgarian  AK74. The Rommy was all in a parked finish and my global reciever matched it nearly perfectly! The problem I now have is the receiver for the 74 build will need to be painted to match the remainder of the kit.  I'd strip the whole gun but I doubt that this rifle was ever even carried, and it seems like a waste to go through that work to get a match.  My question is, are there any finishes that match the original, I am aware of Guncote and the others, but do they match?  

Thanks Templar, kinda figured that was the best way to go.  I was trying to get a little lazy, maybe save screwing up the whole rifle.  I'm a fan of blued and parked finishes, if I stip it I may not paint it if it looks good under the paint.  Did do a little strip job on some original receiver parts from the Bulgarian 74 kit.  Under the saftey stop is raw steel, other areas are parkerized.  Appears tha the factory job is to park, then paint the assembled rifle.  Paint came off rather easily with carb cleaner.

Have another idea to run past everyone.  Somewhere I gat a link for a black oxide finish from Casswell Inc..  Looks like it would be a great black finish for my projects.  Anyone out there familiar with this stuff.   Instructions say it goes on cold and lasts quite well.  Here is the link.

I just started using Gun Kote and it definately rocks. It can be used on steel or aluminum to give the same color finish on both, I just did my Maadi with an aluminum ACE stock and the finish matches the rest of the rifle really good. It doesn't look like that could be done with the Caswell product ...
