If I had to guess, I would imagine that is the Russian version of JROTC or something.. Russian men of military age look allot older then these guys.. These guys dont even look like they have pubes.

From reading the guys stuff, it sounds like in Russia at the time (don't know about now - the pics are from 96) you had two options while in college. You could either take an ROTC with boot camp type class for two years, or be drafted for a year after graduation. |

Those kids look tough. Reminds me of the Nazi Youth Camps... I don't think anyone under 18 should go to war, you are just a kid with no real fear. And fear is what keeps you alive to fight one more battle, thats just my opinion though. |

Not mention how they beat back probably the one of the greatest land armies ever, The German Blitzkrieg, all the way back to Berlin. Not to mention Napoleons little bluder. The russian military was alway more geared for defense of the "motherland" then projecting power, despite what you saw in movies like Red Dawn. They have been invaded a fair number of times. That being said, they really just a shell of their formers selves from their Soviet "heydays" |

The Young Pioneers. Kind of like the Hitler Youth in that they were grooming for and run by the Communist party. Nothing like getting merit badges for the fastest field strip of an AK74.

Young pioneers wasn't quite as extreme as the Hitler Jungen. Kinda in between Hitler Youth and Boy Scouts. It also depended upon which communist country too. |

First pics: college ROTC program.
Second pics, a program/class is called "war preperation", all students must pass it before leaving highschool. Program teaches basic skills and weapons handling. As for the little kids, think military academy, only they start after elementary school (7th grade, IIRC). |

Well, the bottom line was that the Hitler Youth and the Pioneers programs both had one 'ending' for it's participants - becoming members of their nationalist parties. Scouts don't go: Cubscout, Boyscout, Eaglescout, Member of the American Socialist Nationalist Party. We left that to the socialists
