I'm of the opinion that an SKS turns into more and more of a piece of shit as each crappy aftermarket accessory is added.  All mine are as they came.

i've never seen an SKS scope mount stay put.  even the ones with set screws move around.  i suspose maybe there is one or two that stay still,  but i've never seen one.

We all make mistakes.

I put a reciever rale scope on mine before I realized how retarded I was.

IMHO it's sinful to take a perfected impliment of war, and turn it into a pile of crap by modifying it with all of this modern day cheapy trash.  It's a huge factor in why the SKS doesn't get the respect that it deserves among today's shooting crowd.

+1
I will admit to having put one of mine into a Ramline WoodTech hunting type stock.
But there's no way in hell I'd ever subject a SKS to one of those "tactical" crap stocks.  Or use one of those POS hicap mags, loosey goosey dust cover scope mounts or blast enhancer muzzle brakes.
The only aftermarket stuff for the SKS that makes any sense IMHO is the "recoil pad" butt extension to lengthen the stock a bit or one of the quality conventional style synthetic stocks from Choate/Butler Creek/Ramline/Bell & Carson for the same reason (even then, they look like ass IMHO).
Most ChiCom SKS wood stocks I've seen suck (the one replaced by the WoodTech Ramline was a cracked, splintery, oil soaked, loose fitted mess).  But I'd rather replace them with the ChiCom red fiberglass military stock just to preserve the ComBloc looks.
Anybody who would fuxxor up a Russian/Romanian/Yugo SKS with ATI/Tapco UberTacticalNinjaRamboWannabeAK crap should be beaten about the head & shoulders with a 2x4.
And the POS duckbill 30 rnd mags?  Rectally inserted sans lube.  Sideways!  It's not an AK, quit trying to make it into one.

Most of the SKS crap is easily reversable....except the smacktards always seem to lose the original # matched dust cover or magazine.  My Sino-Soviet SKS suffered that fate.  Original mag & dust cover long gone because somebody tried to make it into the AK they really wanted.

heck, i just picked up an sks yesterday and i was going to shine up the wood and make it all smooth.. i couldn't even bring myself to do that. i like the worn look on the sks. i can't even imagine putting on a synth stock.

The ChiCom red fiberglass ones are ok.  Fugly as hell, but in a utilitarian EastBloc way.  They're pretty much the same as the wood military stocks.  Buttplate & sling swivel are a bit different but the overall profile is the same.  They are legit milsurp SKS stocks.
The Ramline WoodTech looks to be wood at a distance but has a "sporter" profile  .  It's about 2" longer reach of pull over the original.  Not quite 100% sure if I like it yet.  All the US aftermarket synthetic stocks are "off" somewhat.  The conventional style are a bit too "Elmer Fudd/Bubba" deer rifle for my tastes & the pistol grip/Dragunov/folders are too "ghetto/trailer park" tactical IMHO.

I'm almost embarassed to show up at the range with an SKS anymore.  Not because I don't like the gun.  But because I so often see the dork wannabes shooting SKSs, that I start to put anyone I see shooting one in that category.

I sometimes feel that way with my AR, especially when the super spring action folding sight titanium rail $500 Aimpoint mount guy is next to me, firing into the dirt or target frame.  I guess some people feel that trash is going to miracle the bullets into the center of the target.

Cool.  A friend showed me his Chineese SKS one time.  The gun apparently was a bringback from Vietnam.  The interesting part was the bullet hole through the buttstock.  Makes you wonder...

The gun was still functional, though.

That's pretty cool.  I wish I could find one like that!

My SKS is staying the way it is.  I cleaned up the stock, that's it.

I have a Russian SKS that I bought in '94? I think.  It is very accurate with the iron sites.  I have not done a thing to it.

Well,

I have several SKS's with ONE Russian and One Chineese that are unmolested.  I like the paratrooper (Chicom) and I like to convert them to US guns with folding stocks, bayonette, and DUCK BILL MAGS and of course US PARTS for legal reasons!

They still run great.  Why does everyone here hate duck bill mags?  I'll admit I hate the plastic ones; however, the metal 30 round mags work just fine in my SKSs.

i got a stock Yugo M59/66....it will stay that way forever...some things are best left alone, untouched.....I hate seeing perfectly good military rifles turned into fine looking pieces of garbage

The SKS is a good rifle as long as you leave it alone. That can be said for others as well

My papaw put a scope on his.... I also think it took all of the perfectness ( is that a word?) of it.

I wouldn't say this is "Bubba'd", but it is a slight bit of overkill though, and the rifle is way too heavy now:

After owning it a while, I have gone back to one of my others that just has a William's firesight set on it. Definitely no synthetic stocks or duckbill's on any of my SKS's; those are better with AK's and AR's anyway. The weirdest part is, my stock cheapo WASR-10 is my most accurate 7.62X39, over 5 SKS's and 1 Saiga (20.5"). Go figure!

I put a monte carlo stock on mine and chucked the wooden stock when I got it.  I would kill to be able to put a wood stock back on.

Good to hear

About the original post:  I have seen some of "those" types and talked to them too.  It's funny to hear them talk about their guns and all the shit on them.  "Oh this, yeah its a chinese sniper rifle, but I made a few improvements like the good mags (re: duckbill) and the better stock (re: ATI dragunov)
