I hate building just a standard AKM...so I started with a  AMD kit and some parts...

so I took a AMD kit  and blind pin welded a 2" extention and Jtac47 brake to the barrel,
cut and fit a standard gas tube. Cut off the charging handle and re-located it to the left side.
I then got rid of the AK safety lever in favor of a AR style that I placed in the same place as my AR.(fabrication was easier than I thought)
AK mag releases drive me nuts so I designed my own. I used a butler creek stock that I cut down two inches to match warsaw length.
I still have to weld up the old safety holes and top cover. and I just ordered a beryl style rail and MI HGs
not going to blast and coat till I'm done customizing

Great Looking so far.
How close does the charging handle come to the end of your nose when firing?
That is the first thing I would do when firing, is to watch the bolt cycling back & forth, & not look at the target like I an supposed to do.
I like the  mag release, does it ever get caught on anything like the sling....ECT?

charging handle is fine...still tweaking the mag release. it sits tight against the trigger guard with no mag inserted (like I designed) but drops down that little bit with mag inserted.
it is still out of the way of my fingers(knuckles) when firing. I am trying to take this build to what feels comfortable to me. I can change a mag pretty quick on a standard platform...with this release the mag drops free from it's own weight
which leaves my other hand free to insert right after mag drop, rather than two steps...clear mag then insert.

I'm still practicing.

I dig your safety mod !

Can you make it Ambi?  Which way do you flip it to take it off safe?

it works exactly the same as an AR...in the pic it is in the S position, flip it down to 6oclock for the F position.

The safety is brilliant.  How do I make one?  Can I see the inside?

Pix of the inside or you just welded it to the outside of the receiver!

Ok  I decided to add one more feature to my safety...I found upon firing that the safety would drift...so I drilled the backside of the AR safety and added a spring and ball bearing to make a detent.
Now it works great.
here's a few pics til I get her blasted and refinished

Clever design - have you had any issues with accidentally hitting the mag release? It looks like a lot of surface area to get snagged on something.

not yet....this was sort of my prototype design. after using it a few times at the range I am going to make a few changes.  I am going to make it more "flush" with the trigger guard, shorten it just a bit,and install a stop so it won't over travel.

good job, i like to see thinking outside the box.

could you break down your safety and give a pic of the parts?

i think what you did is great and would like to copy it for my own aks if you dont mind.
