I agree 100%.

I have been tempted by the dark side and have joined the Sith.
Link Posted: 5/23/2005 7:07:46 AM EST
As a recent addition to the Dark Side I couldn't agree more.
Link Posted: 5/23/2005 7:12:52 AM EST
Yes I agree. Some guys with ARs go WAY too far with the extras. And I bet half of them arnt even proficient with their iron sights.

Try requesting a pic over there and see what happens.

I was one of those guys with 10lbs worth of gadgets hanging around the AR… and always laugh about AK’s.
Well, one day I borrowed my brother’s AK47 and I was shocked by its simplicity & robust design! 4 years later… I’ve following AK & related items.

Arsenal 105A1R
Maadi underfolder
3 Vector underfolders
AK74 Bulgarian
2 SAR-3
4 AMD-65
73 AK related mags

Feel the power of dark side… you can’t never go back… no SIR!

Yeah I got an AR15 in a trade. Bushmaster witha 20" inch barrel and "no-ban" features. Nobody likes to shoot it when I take my rifles out. Everyone's always fighting over my SA M7 Classic.
Link Posted: 5/23/2005 7:40:59 AM EST
As an owner of both, I visit both sides. Some AR owners are truly overboard. I have never understood taking a short, light, quick handling carbine like an M4, and hanging on more shit than a Christmas tree has. If you ever wanted to get rich, all you have to do is invent a 5 rail M4 handguard and call it Xtreme Tactical Urban Assualt Defense Machine Firearm Products XM18877589, and put a $400 price tag on it. It would sell like hotcakes. That said, I like my AR, and there are some usefull mods you can do to one, but it seems like a lot of people are more concerned with making gun porn than a functioning rifle.

Who couldn't love faces like these?
Link Posted: 5/23/2005 7:48:00 AM EST
I have both ARs and AKs and have discovered a few facinating things I never would have thought.

1- The addition of laser, flashlite, radar, FLIR, GPM guided bullet pointer isn't a replacement for practice.

2- All that stuff can come right off there when you realize the above.

3-There is nothing light to carry when the thermometer goes triple digit.

4- The grass is always greener in other people's gunsafes.

It is funny to go ever there and just read through the posts. I go that side once a month or so,
and every time i do it makes me happier to be over here on the dark side.

Its really gotten to be a big pissing contest to see who can spend the most $$
to double the weight of their AR.

I especially love the discussions on terminal ballistics of the various .223 ammunition.
It's Fackler this, Fackler that...Very funny stuff.

but yet nobody wants to step in front of one at 100 yards...:)

I like my AR and my MAK! I couldnt decide which was more fun to shoot! The bushy 16" was pretty freaking accurate, but the MAK surprised the hell out of me for accuracy! I dont know, I guess I have to go with the ultimate adage, get them both! I feel like anakin. If only someone could invent a giant mag coupler to connect the two rifles together. That would be the shizznit!
Link Posted: 5/23/2005 9:24:58 AM EST
Mmmhhmm.

What's funny to me is how my own perspective has changed over the last couple years. ARs were once the most fascinating and interesting firearms to be had. I had to know every little detail about this part & that part, etc. These USGI mags are cool because of .... These USGI mags are cool for.... The correct brand of gizmo for a reproduction SOCOM whatever rifle is....

AKs were utilitarian rifles that worked when you needed them, but were otherwise unremarkable.

Now it's the other way around.

This rivet head needs to be round, this rivet head needs to be flat, this ink stamp means this, this arsenal mark is from that factory, etc... Holy shit.

I just paid $18 for a Soviet sling that was made for $.03 in 1981 by communist peasants in bondage to the state because it has the ink stamp & is "authentic" for the kit I'm building, which is a whole other story, by the way.

"Ooh, look at the flat-faced gas block on this kit. Hey this rear sight block has the straight, unchamphered top edges that were later replaced by the ones with the relief cuts under the rear sight adjustment drums."

Too much fun!

The dark side is cheaper.
Link Posted: 5/23/2005 9:39:00 AM EST
I'll say this in support of the evil black rifles; I have several with all the shit hanging off them but lately I've been going back to the basics with my ARs as well. Standard handguards, A2 or detachable A2 carry handle sights, no vertical grips, etc. All that junk is cool but it doesn't make you a better shooter. Only rounds down range and practice will do that!

Link Posted: 5/23/2005 9:39:39 AM EST
Well now . . . .

I have -- and LOVE -- my AR system rifles, but about the only thing hangin' on one of mine is a EO-Tech sight -- and that's on my little M-4 flat-top. My other AR's are pretty much "stock".

And I have a few AK's too -- and those are my "love affair" ! ! !

Cheap to build, cheap to feed, and fun to play with ! ! And ya know -- they go BANG EVERY TIME ! ! !

And at the local gun club I see the dudes that spend a pile of $$$ on the newest, bestest, fanciest rifle, hang-on a bunch of stuff and can't hit the broad side of a barn. Or. . . they never "maintain" their weapon and then wonder why it fails.

My Momma always told me "find a good, reliable rifle and if you take care of it, it will take care of you".

She also said "practice, practice, practice ! ! Ya ain't gonna learn it from a book ! !"

Smart old girl, she was . . . . . .

I swing both ways. I have an AR carbine that weighs about 8lbs with light and EoTech. Honestly, if you want something to use in the dark, nothing is faster. I like my AKs and have Josh building one right now (That Polish underfolder I was smart enough to buy back when they were cheap!), but for CQB potential, the safety and sights make it enough slower that it is not my bump-in-the-night gun. However, for knocking around and travel, AK works just fine.

i like both honestly. i think they both have their place, although, i have to say..
i started off as a AR guy, i was crazy about them. slowly but surely, the AK side of me is taking hold, and i'm beginning to reason things out in terms of how many AKs i could amass.

no doubt i'll still be building my collection up on both sides of the fench, but for good commie killing badness, the AK just fits. plus, theres something about a gun that i can throw in the mud and stomp on if its not my day that makes me feel good.

well i also own both i have a light and EO-tech on my colt 16" and just built a 20"with a scope and bipod but i can truly say that the AK's are just as good but in different ways. Like everything else they both have there ups and downs.

As for the bullet fragmentation heres my take on that bla bla bla bla bla etc. If you practice and are proficient you can make good shots and make two if the first one doesnt quite put him down.

And they are a bit more hostile crowd............ But im easy to get along with.
Link Posted: 5/23/2005 11:10:42 AM EST
I see only 2 things you might ever need on a rifle:
-SCOPE/RED DOT
-BIPOD IF SHOOTING LONG RANGE

You dont really need a flashlight, have u heard of "shoot the lights?"!
All the other gadjets are for james bond.

And I would spend my money on a real can, now THAT is useful. I've seen some for $600 for .223 plus $200 tax... Not cheap, but definetly worth it.
Link Posted: 5/23/2005 12:04:17 PM EST
Momma also said:

"Play with bees and you're gonna get stung. . ."

or something like that . . . .

I made the mistake of replying to this guy's post:

1/7" - vs - 1/9" Twist Rate For A Basic Defense Carbine

Basic Defense?

Notice how I tried asking the guy what he really wanted to use his rifle for, while the "75gr TAP and 75gr BH" was already being thrown around.

I love AK's and I have an M4gery which I really like, but I would never use one for home defense. I don't understand what these guys mean by "CQB" unless they mean some kind of 3-gun scenario. If I had just myself and lots of property maybe I would use a carbine, but I have a .38 Taurus on my nightstand and a 12 gauge behind my bedroom door.

They are funny over there. I think I will go back and tell the guy to get an AK.

I have to agree I love AK's. Although I have to admit that I have an AR but its clean and simple and no bells and whisles.

I've found that there are a far greater number of assholes on the AR side than on the AK side. Coincedence?

I don't know about that but I think you can find real accurate information on the AK side more often than you can on the AR side. Which is full of opinions more than anything.

I enjoy shooting both..and owning both..I used to have a couple of SKS rifles, and loved what the ammo cost, and the fact that I probably could drop a deer with one if I had to...The AK and AR rifles are both BAD ASS at the range...there isn't anything cooler than setting up next to a guy with his plinker 22, and firing these guns as quickly as possible..I don't have the bumpfire down yet, but I'm getting close..

AK-47- $400.00
AR-15-$900.00
223 $1.00-1000.00
7.62x39 $1.00-1000.00
The look on other peoples faces at the range.............PRICELESS!

It wasn't always like that but it definitely took a turn for the worst after September of 2004.

I was amazed when I started spend more time in here. People can actually carry on mature conversations here without resorting to personal attacks and without 14-year-old (at least they act 14) trolls pretending they are Delta operators.

Funny, isn't it? The more barbaric the weapon, the more civilized the conversation. The more technological the weapon, the bigger the douchebag!

In my opinion the three biggest flaws of the AR15 are the,

1. Gas system. Its comparable to having a Ferrari with a V4 engine.

2. The .223/5.56 round it fires. Its alittle too small for my tastes.

3. The buffer tube. The buffer tube really annoys the hell out of me.

All of these "flaws" can be fixed.....for only a few grand.

At this point in time id prefer the AK. And if your paying $900 for an AR your getting screwed.
Link Posted: 5/23/2005 7:56:22 PM EST
Just don't equate that side of the board with the actual rifle they speak of. IMO, it is two entirely different things.

I once went to the range with my Romy AK. Upon arrival I counted 3 different groups firing AR type rifles. During the cease fire I placed my targets came back to my bench and noticed one of the AR guys eying up my AK. I greeted him then sat down and commenced to place lead down range. I then noticed that the AR guy next to me was not shooting. I stopped firing and looked over and he was looking at me and my AK and with this look on his face . He then said I would love to shoot one of those. Little did he know how bad I wanted to shoot an AR. I now have one of each so no complaints.

I always keep a box of Wolf or something around for that guy who wandered onto the range never having fired an EBR or AK before. Community relations is important, and has also allowed me to shoot all sorts of oddballs I had never considered for my collection.

I don't have any "guns", only communist made "Homeland Defense Units". I never go to the range but when I'm there, very often fellows will stand nearby and hang around looking at my HDU. At least half the time I'll put 5 or 6 rounds in a mag and invite them to shoot. Best 60 cents you can spend.

I'm just real careful to fully supervise the shooter since the 'lookers' generally don't know the HDU Model 47. Don't want any accidents. :)
