Just bought a WASR-10 from deguns.net and the wood is a very light shade (almost blonde) and I would like to change the color.

Are there easy guides on how to remove the wood and do this type of work?

there is so many ways to do that, check on the internet, there are tons of sites about finishing AK furniture. not to mention  YOUTUBE has a bunch of tutorials on finishing wood stocks

Couple years ago I refinished a destroyed mosin stock and just recently I redid an AK forend.

Steps are pretty simple:
-Remove wood parts, take off swivel plates, butt plate, etc
-Apply a shellack remover (nasty goopy stuff that sits on the exterior finish and softens it up)
-use water and a scrubby to scrape all the shellack/poly/whatever and expose the bare wood (takes a few cycles)
-Allow wood to dry and sand it down to a decent grit.
-Apply bluing as needed (your sanding will likely make some shiny metal in a few spots.
-Apply wood stain (miniwax "gunstock" is one of my favorites for old surplus guns) and let dry.  Apply more coats to darken.
-Apply your choice of poly (high gloss, satin, etc) and let dry.  More coats = more shiny, less coats = more "woody"

I use Polyshades.  Sometimes the wood is dense so it doesn't always take stain.  Not sure about your wood.

It applies the same color to all the parts.  Color is in the clearcoat, more coats the darker the color.

Refinishing the wood on an AK is a fun project.

What color are you going for?

Something more brown with some red would be awesome.

What I have now is almost blonde.
