Do you coil your belt or layer it in? I have always coiled mine - just wondering if one way works better than another.

Layer. It's the way I've always done it. Great question though, I have always thought it's easier on the gun to feed that way.

I have always coiled. It just came to me as I was loading some linked 8mm into a can that layering may be a bit better for feeding.

I always have coiled mine. Seems like layering would be easier for a rectangular box while a round drum the coil is easier to fit in.

I layer mine.

I have never shot a semi RPD. Just full auto.

That might make a difference.

Layer.

Why in the world would anyone would put unnecessary strain on the weapons belt feeding abilities by making it have to pull the weight of the other rounds loaded into the drum?

This idea of coiling my rounds gives me a head ache.

Just a quick update - The translated German field manual specifies that the belts should be rolled.

Bettendorf and I are going to have to see a picture of the text. Thanks!

Sure! I feel these pictures fall under fair use. I will pull down if need be. I have several manuals translated by this person... He does an excellent job.

Nice, thanks for posting. I'm still layering.

The nutsacks I use have a diagram on the inside flap that shows to layer the ammo for the M249. I'm guessing the links make it a tad easier for that.
