I do not see an obvious route to removal.

Theres a screw holding it on, easy to see, its towards the back by the mag. Take it out and slide the hangaurd straight off the barrel. Least thats how I got mine off !

Screw goes into the receiver.

There is a screw in the bottom of the receiver in front of the mag well. Remove it, and slide the hanguards forward to remove.

A few of the early ones used the gas tube to retain the handguard. There is a rib that fits in a verticle slot on the inside of the handguards and a spring on the bottom extention of the handguard that goes into the receiver and pushes forward against the trunion to keep it tight.

Take the gas tube off and pull the handguard forward is how it comes off.
