Ok, I have a Romak than I like it, but I have the bug to buy something different in 7.62x39.  A Mini 30, an AR in 7.62x39, maybe one of the nicer SKS's, maybe even one of those long barrel maadi's or somesuch, I dunno.   Variety is the spice of life and all that, but I am curious what the "AK guys" think of the "other options".  Thanks.

get an sks, the mini 30 is not worth the extra money as they are pretty comparable accuracy wise.  AR15s in 7.62x39 are pretty cool but decent mags can be a bit of a problem to get.  or you could get an RPK built

Thompson Contender makes both rifles and pistol in 7.62x39.  they are single-shot, but extremely accurate.

Good answer, but I neglected to mention that 7.62x39 *IS* the "other caliber.  I have 4 AR's, 2 FAL's, an AR10....  and one lonely AK...

The Yugo SKSs are about the nicest around and are very affordable. They have a totally different operating system and 'feel' and are available in unissued condition.

The VZ-58 resembles an AK, but is totally different internally. They're expensive, but cool.

The Mini-30 probably isn't worth it. I have a Mini-14 and I love it, but you get more bang for your buck with an CAR or M4 type AR-15.

Vulcan arms makes the AR-47...an AR-15 in 7.62x39 that takes AK mags instead of rigged up AR mags. Probably your best bet. Vulcan can't build an AK worth a crap, but it's a lot easier to assemble an AR so this thing may work well.

Both Ruger and CZ make (or made) bolt rifles in 7.62x39.

If you just want a different style of gun but want to stick with the same theme, get an AK-74 clone. You'll be amazed at the difference in accuracy at long range between a 7.62x39 and 5.45x39 guns. You could also go with a WASR-3 or SAM-5 if you prefer 5.56x45.

Lastly, you could get a PSL and have some long range fun.

Oh, in that case I think a RPD or RPK would suite you quite well

Get a Chinese,Romanian, or Russian SKS. A chrome barrel is a much better than having a grenade launcher, unless you have a case of 22mm grenades in your basement or you're planning on finding some.

I heard somewhere that Lee Enfields could be hacked to chamber the 7.62X39 with the same barrel and action.  If you have C&R you could get a real beater for cheap and it woould be a cool project.  Just don't do it with a nice matching rifle!!

Somebody posted a pic and link to an Enfield from Australia in 7.62x39 that took AK mags not long ago.

IIRC there have been some Carcano carbines rebarreled to 7.62x39 & modified to use AK mags (might have been single stack AK mags though).
