Please forgive this question if it's been asked a bunch before. I'm still relatively new to the "shooting end" of the AK47 and am depending on your experience in this matter. I've got a Century GP75 with the standard black plastic stock and handguard. While the rifle does everything that it's supposed to do (goes "bang" everytime the trigger's pulled) the barrel gets uncomfortably hot after just a moderate amount of shooting. Is there another brand of polymer handguard, or complete front/rear set, that I could buy that would eliminate this problem? If so, could you please specify the brand and the best place to buy it?
Any suggestion/help is greatly appreciated!

US made: http://www.k-var.com/shop/product.php?productid=17030&cat=366&page=1
Bulgarian: http://www.k-var.com/shop/product.php?productid=17036&cat=366&page=1

They're almost identical. If you can have the bulgarian set on there without messing up your parts count, that's the way to go.

For the whole set:

or just get any set that has a lower rail and add a vertical grip. that is the best way to keep your hands away from the heat.

You could try some DIY heat protection.  To test it, you could add a few layers of heavy-duty aluminum foil between your barrel and your handguard.  If it works out, you could move to the more professional stuff, if desired.

Heavy Duty Aluminum Foil

Heatshield Tape

The Heatshield can handle up to 1100* F continuous!  So, try the aluminum foil and if it works, you may like the aluminum tape.

The Aluminum foil can be picked up at any local grocery store.  And you might be able to find the heatshield tape at an auto parts/racing store.

Good luck.

Trying holding your AK by the magazine.  It works for me and I prefer it to a vertical foregrip.

OR....just go "old school" and put an original Romanian stockset on with a "dingus". The dingus may not look great, but they work and feel great. Embrace the dingus!

If you are going to buy a set look at Apex Gun Parts and see if they still have Bulgarian/Russian polymer sets for around $45.00.  They have a heatshield in the lower handguard.

Thank you all very much! It seems that the most economical route would be the heatshield or exhaust tape. If I can't get that to work okay it looks like some new furniture.

My Lancaster AK74 has red wood furniture and the lower hand guard's paint is peeling off because of the heat from shooting.

Well different handguards will radiate heat differently, but they will all get hot.  You can get one with a metal lining to lessen the impact, wear gloves, or hold your rifle differently.  The one way you'll eliminate it is getting a foregrip of some kind.

Always wear gloves when you're shooting an assault rifle. If you're fighting you're definitely going to want to run it that way, so train as you fight.
