Guys,

My next project will be converting one of my SAR 3s to a shorty 5.56 weapon.

I have two Krinkovs (7.62 and 5.45) and would love to have another in 5.56, but can't seem to pry the checkbook out of my wife's grip.

I'm looking to shorten an AK inexpensively and either using a fake can on the end or a long muzzle brake.

I've been consulting with In Range and have come up with a tentative project. Before I move ahead, anyone have additional ideas? Pics??

Thanks,

Krinkfreak

I think the AK 102 idea would be a much better option. Only hard part is finding front sight bases. What about using a Krinkov front sight base, and chop it down so when a AK74 brake is installed it's 16 inches?

Gary's fake commie cans are the best IMO.

Yeah, no kidding. What about an AK-102?

Check out Krebs Custom. They have a M3 and a "stretch" rifle with an AK-102/104/105 style gas block.

I wonder if he sells them seperately. This would probably be an easier conversion to do verses a Krinkov, since the handguards will be the same. It would probably be more practical too, considering that you can't have less than a 16" barrel (or 13.5" + 2.5" muzzle brake). For .223 though, I wouldn't cut it any less than 14.5" due to bullet fragmentation issues past 100 yards (unless you plan to shoot 77 grain match king for home defensive purposes).

Ah hell, it's a fun gun, build your Krink. I'm babbling again

Not to sound like an a$$, but if you chop the barrel down and permanently attach a long fake can or muzzle brake, have you really *shortened* anything in the true sense of the word? Or have you just compromised your ballistic effectiveness and increased your muzzle blast?

If you just want "the look", then get a fake can that slips over your 16" barrel and hides it... best of both worlds!

Shooter521. Excellent point. Gotta decide now if slipover can is the way to go.

Gotta check on a Krinkov FSB and an AK103 Gas Block.

The commie can would be an authentic touch to the weapon. I'll wait until they are advertised as "in stock" on the SAI website.

Anyone have a krink front end they want to get rid of cheap?
