I did a search for folding stocks and received no results.

I am asking this here in the AK side of life because AK's seem to have a better selection of folders while AR's are concentrated on collapsible stocks.

From what I see there are three types of folding stocks available.

The first is the under folder. Primarily a wire framed "U" with a butt plate that can extend downward to form a shoulder plate or extend upward to clear the magazine in the closed position. It folds flat against the hand guards and has no extension out the back of the rifle. Downside it it does interfere with a solid grip on the hand guard.

The Second is the top folder. The opposite of the under folder it works on the same principle. I've only seen this for shotguns because it interferes with the sights.

The third is the side folder which as an extension on the back of the receiver and replaces the fixed stock in a fixed stock rifle. All the ones I've seen fold into the side of the firearm with the action (Same side as the ejection port). The fold into a lower angle so as not to interfere with the ejection of spent casings. They are made of plastic keeping the skeletonized shape of the original stock or are made of metal wire.

My questions are these. Why do the side folders all fold toward the action side instead of the left side? Does the reduction in weight make a rifle front heavy? What are the most important factors in selecting a folding stock? Why is a folder preferred to a hardwood or laminate stock?

I've been wondering these things since folders have become available for SKS, AK, 10/22, mini-14's, and most every pump shotgun. I know everyone has their favorite brand, but while suggestions are welcome I’m just trying to become a more informed consumer. Thanks for your time!

Do they fold based on the way they are attached or based on the design of the stock? Do the same companies make a right and left version of the same stock?

Hey guys--just thought I'd put htis in here.
I have a romy WASR2 that I want to put a folding AND collapsing stock on.  I am also interested in the KVAR left side folder, but it costs more than my rifle--does anyone else have it cheaper?
I shoot lefty and use a PK-AS red dot on this rifle.
I don't want to gun smith on my rifle, I'm looking for something drop in.  I want good quality.
Thanks for the advice.

ACE...get an used M4 6 pos or CAR style, use pignose adapter on it.
On the AK receiver side, use either an external or internal receiver block....if a drop-in, use external receiver block.

ACE or Stormwerkz hinge will connect the pignose adapter to receiver block.

Hey, thanks for the replies.  I was thinking ACE as well.  As far as the PK_AS, I like it but zeroed it in at 25, and shot it at 50--so all the shots went left.  Not as easy to use as an eotsck, etc. but authentic, small, light, rugged and fun.  Great clarity, too.  I goofed and got the one that does not sit directly over the bore.  the one that does would work better for me, but it also sits somewhat higher.  I am simply going to zero it at 300 this summer to accomadate.
One other thing--if I put an AR type stock on my AK, I am concerned that the stock will be too low for an optic.  Any solutions?
