I've looked through alot of pics from the war in Chechnya. I see alot of AK-74M's with the 45 rd bakelite magazines and even the plum 45 rd magazine too. No RPKs or RPK-74's though.

ETA: Thanks for the answers and info. Added some pics of the 5.45mm 45 rd magazines.

Acccording to Stottman most countries only issue RPKs on a 1/10 ratio to the AK ...

ETA: I catch a glimpse of one on TV every so often ... There was a current clip on Afganistan last week and I saw several RPKs ... Seemed like the cool thing to have ... ...

Yes, RPK74 is still in use... It might end up being something though where the soldiers dump them when they get the chance..

Heres a Russian Military RPK74 I fired a couple years ago in Russia-

Stott,

Did you by chance get a pic of the rest of that scope rail? If so I'd really like to see it. Thanks,

Brick

I was in Armenia a former Soviet country two years ago, too make a long story short i was on a military base in the city of Yerevan (the capital), the base i was on is a strictly airborne training base, i was there with a group and was the only one who showed interest in firearms, so anyways the commander of the base liked my dirty Armenian jokes and befriended me (we drank lots of vodka together)and invited me to their range (with a donation of course, typical 3rd world country mentality). To get to the RPK's, i looked over several, all were RPK74's the one that i was drawn to the most was an RPK with a side folding stock, it looked the same as a standard RPK club foot stock but had a hinge similar to one on an AKS74, It was chambered in 5.45, the designation was RPKS74. Of all the AK's i looked at or fired that day the only weapon chambered in 762x39 was a suppressed ak, they had no suppressed weapons other than older ak47 types, except for a stenchkin pistol and several suppressed makarovs. I fired the RPK's, a DSHK, an aks74 and a RPG7D all for a corrupt donation of 150 bucks which is big money to them. Heres the kicker to it all though, i had everything taped on my camcorder, including all the digi pics i took of all the weapons on the camcorder which was stolen (1500 dollar camera) three weeks later in Naples Italy go figure. But i have that day tattooed in my brain and get a woodie just thinking about it lol. Going back to Armenia in January, so hopefully......... McM

Is it just me, or does someone need to retake remedial firearm safety?

The russians have long considered not wearing helmets "macho". You see quite a few guys wearing only their pilotka caps in WW2 photos.

Nope.

I can't see a problem-maybe he has his target in sight?

They re-issued them after the penetration of the 5.45 came into question.

Different terrain between Afghanistan and Chechnya. Chechnya has more building and urban fighting was happening alot more. So they gave the Spetsnaz guys the option for the AKM's and AKMS's. They also made 7N10 and 7N22 5.45mm ammunition types for use in Chechnya.
