First, are they chambered in 5.56 or .223? If .223, is there any danger with shooting 5.56 in them?

Where do these .223 barrels originate, and besides the barrels what parts are different from a 5.45 AK?

I am thinking about another AK. I already have a 5.45. So it's either another 5.45, a 7.62X39, or try out a .223 model.

Are the .223 models as accurate as the 5.45 models, or just about as accurate as the 7.62X39 rifles?

I guess the main reason I'm thinking about a .223 AK is simply because of ammo cosolidation (I'm always buying 5.56 because of my AR's).

Any input appreciated.

Thanks for the info. So why exactly were Russia and Bulgaria making .223 barrels for AK's? Just for resale here? Or did some eastern block countries go to Nato 5.56 after the Soviet collapse?

Anyway, what do you guys think. If the choice were just between a 7.62X39 AK and a .223 AK, which would you go for? I know the mag issue is there, but besides that wouldn't the .223 have an advantage on accuracy alone?

BTW, the SAR-3 is probably the way I'd go.

Most guys say the .223 is more accurate than the 7.62 X 39 in the AK. The AK will run the dirt cheap Russian ammo with no problems either. Ammo cost would be a factor in buying the .223 Ak over another .223.  On the other hand, 7.62 X 39 is cheaper still.

THE reason I have not ventured to get an SAR-3 is the mag. issue. My standard 33 mags per gun rule would bankrupt me for reliable weiger mags.  I just bought a second AR barrel and figured I would use that gun longer. (to bad I never shoot it)

My VEPR K .223 is a sub-MOA rifle with good, 52 gr. hollowpoint. The RobArm mags and Bulgie 5.56 waffles work great. That K model shoots as well as my H-BAR AR.

Picked up a SAR 3 about 4-5 weeks ago, and I am in LOVE ! !   Installed a Red Star hammer, and use Weiger and Bulgy mags. Also install one of those "krink" style stocks ( so I can tell if it's my SAR 3, or one of my AKs in 7.62) 110% satisfied. Eats everything I can stuff into a mag.    Scroll down for a few weeks and see my post: "Well, I bought the SAR 3", or something like that.
