This is a 5.56 rifle with a 18.25in barrel. 
The ~16 inch rods seem worthless because they're too short.  The 7.62 rods are probably too thick to use in the 5.56 barrel. 

Is the only option to get a AK-74, cut it down to size, and thread it?  This seems like a lot of work for a simple cleaning rod. 
Any other suggestions?

Cutting down an RPK-74 rod is probably your best bet. You don't have to thread the end if you don't plan on using the cleaning kit attachments and are going to use the rod just for looks/knocking out stuck cases.
