The price is fine. Check the overall condition, make sure everything moves properly and make sure you clean out the cosmo. The gas selector is down for semi and up for single shot. You will find the Yugo generally more accurate than an AK but it is C&R and you should not try to turn it into an AK. Buy and enjoy it for what it is. With a budget of $500 you could probably get a yugo and a WASR if you shop well.

They are really two different animals. They feel alot different. I like the ergonomics of the AK better. The SKS is a nice cheap semi-auto rifle, and it's a reliable weapon. However, if yoou liked the AK the SKS will not be the same and you shouldn't expect it to be.
$109 is a pretty good price IF: - The wood is in decent condition. They are not works of walnut art but there shouldn't be cracks or huge gouges. - The bore is bright and not pitted (the ammo used in these was corrosive so if it was not cleaned well it could have damage). - There is nothing you will have to repair or need to modify to get it working and it has not been hacked upon by buba to make it a "huntin' gun". - The safty near the trigger should snap into fire and safe with a snap you can feel. If it just travels between the two without snaping it's not in good shape. - No rust in the gas tube or anywhere else. Otherwise there isn't much to them. I sure others could tell you more to look at. None of mine have been real exciting target shooters. Minute of man is about all I get but some can be pretty decent. My friend has one that shoots 3 or so inches at 100yds. Luck of the draw really. Mine is for fun shooting and short range plinking and it's pretty fun in that role. |

I have an SKS I bought used that has a synthetic stock. Since I don't go to a range and shoot only iron sights, it is more accurate than I am standing unsupported at 75 to 100 yards. I really like it, and Camy loves it because it is light, has very little recoil, and fits her arm reach nicely.
I have a Romy AK, too, a kit gun that was built for me. I like it equally as well as my SKS or more, but finding reliable mags is a bitch. If $500 is the limit, I'd have to suggest the SKS. Figure... What? $350 for the AK, and then FFL and shipping fees if you don't have a local place. Add at least another $50 in mags, and then figure ammo costs, and your $500 is pretty much gone. If you do an SKS, however, you can grab a 30-round mag and replace the 10-round box, and then buy lots of ammo. You'll still have over 1/2 your $500, which could be used for more ammo or deposited to get your AK a little later. |

One more note, stay away from 20 and 30 round magazines. These are horrible and very cheap plastic quality.
Stick with the 10 round magazine that comes with the gun, it's what the gun was made for.

My 30-round works flawlessly ans is metal. But it has no bolt hold
 I don't use it because holding the bolt back while stripping rounds into it is a pain in the ass, and borderline dangerous. If I was born with enough smarts to know how to make one, I'd leave the 30-round in there with my fabricated bolt-hold. Considering that I am a dim bulb, I, too, stick with the 10-round. |

I have a Yugo SKS and a Romy AKM on a Ewbanks reciever. Both are a blast to shoot.
The SKS feels more substantial. More like a rifle than a carbine. Very solid and works like a watch. Awesome gun for the money. I'm looking for another one now for my son. The AKM is lighter, handier and alot of fun with that 30 round clip. The trigger on the SKS is great too once the sear rails and grooves are smoothed and lighter springs installed. Works out to a smooth single stage that breaks nicely at 6#. For target shooting on open sights, it's a better shot than I am. I'd get the SKS first to have fun with while saving up for the AKM. |

That is some beautiful wood on that one! That's laminate? Maybe it's just the pictures, but it didn't look like a laminate to me at first. I'd love to find a hardwood stock with that grain pattern. |

The lighter colored one is a laminated stock which was installed at the arsenal refurbish. The darker one is an original hardwood stock (this is the one that is still available). Each has its own charms. The laminate is flashier, but the hardwood is authentic for how they initially came out of the Tula manufacturing plant. Woody |

Get it. You need both anyway.
The Yugo is supposed to be almost as good as the Russian. I like my Chinese versions of the SKS, but the Russian guys at the gunshop made fun of me when I told them what I had.

Earely models of the chinese SKS are very similar to the Russian SKS models. The Russians helped the Chinese set up their SKS factories, and they took to it with gusto. |

Dude, I hope you aren't talking about the Dunham's in Farmington Hills... cause they only had two SKS, one packed in cosmo and the other was pretty dirty.... I bought the cosmo-packed one. No Expert |

I was going to go there, but instead I went to the one in Southgate. They had 6 in stock, and I of course got the nicest looking one, but I believe there where 2 more that looked pretty nice. The others looked like they been through hell.

That's cool. It figures Southgate would have a better selection. Someone posted here a few days ago about Dunham's having the special... I was out and about and decided to stop in. Like I said, FH only had two... the first one was DAMN NASTY... second one was covered in cosmo. I'm going back tomorrow to pick it up and see if I can get them to do the transfer with my C&R instead of the 4473. maybe after we get them cleaned up, we can go shooting and compare the rifles? +1. Want to strip the stock of all the cosmoline and gunk? Try this. It works. For a collectable stock I would not recommend it but for an SKS stock, what the hell? It did not harm my wife's dishwasher; she was not pissed off at me. Read the article and decide for yourself. It's a good shooter and fun to shoot. Here's my Yugo M59 SKS:

I'm bummed, was gonna go get it today.....got the mail and had a couple of "need to pay" bills....so I have to hold off until paycheck comes on Monday.... so It'll come home tuesday on my next day off. As for cleaning the cosmo, with the colder weather I wasn't planning on being able to do anything outside for long... so I was thinking about the acar wash method with a big plastic bin. clean it off enough to break it down to fit in the tub, and go to the neighborhood car wash (a block away). Figure if it's broken down I won't draw as much attention as having an assembled rifle. Look here for ideas. |

Get the SKS and buy a case or two of ammo. Put the rest in the bank and put in a dollar or two everyday. Wait a few months until you see a really, really good deal-Preban Chinese Milled for 400$ or something along those lines. |

Buy the sks,then buy an ak kit from tapco for 125,a reciever and build your own ak and still have enough money to buy ammo to feed both

Get a C&R license (30 dollars) the order a yugo 59/66 SKS online for around 120, i dont know about where you are, but i know in North Carolina, you can get a WASR-10 for between 250 (for a used one in decent shape) to 399 (brand new), then you will have the best of both worlds, but if you only get one, get the SKS, and put the rest back to buy an AK later. Dont forget to order some stripper clips if you get the SKS!

I ended up getting the sks and hopefully I'm getting the ak soon as my tax refunds come in. Though I still haven't got around to shoot the sks yet; gotta love gun addiction.

just a tip, go ahead and order you some stripper clips probrably 20 or more, a sight adjustment tool, and a gas tube cleaning tool. a Sling(if the gun didnt come with one) a buttstock cleaning kit (if it was missing, alot of SKS's dont have them in anymore) and a broken shell extractor (just in case, ive only used mine 1 time) and be prepared to spend a couple of hours getting the cosmoline off if it was covered in it, most gun shops just wipe it off and stick it on the shelf, the inside is more than likely covered. Then get a couple of thousand rounds of 7.62x39 because SKS's are a addicive toy, hell i bought my first one (a norinco) 2 years ago, and now have a 55 TULA, the Norinco, a yugo 59, and a yugo 59/66, and i am wanting to get an Albanian. like i said its an addiction, i hardly ever shoot my 2 AR-15's anymore, i just take an SKS or two, and maybe my VEPR to the range and shoot all day and it doesnt cost me 100 dollars in ammo, and are ALOT easier to clean up than an AR.
As far as the AK goes, if you have a little extra to spend, get a VEPR, they are built on the RPK reciver and run FLAWLESSLY, plus are ALOT more accurite than the WASR's or SAR 1 or 2. I love mine, i payed a little less than 600 for it, but it was worth every penny!!! |

Local gun store, a guy bought it and got hard up for cash, and had to sell all his guns. I was going to order one before i found that one, but there was a waiting list, i guess you would say i got extremely lucky. It is a VEPR II 7.62x39
