What should I pay to have a machine shop install a lower tang on my rifle. I have all the US parts to get rid of the thumbhole stock, but not the ability to do the lower tang myself. Thanks Ray

I did mine with a hand file, it took me about 2 hours. The receiver is extremely hard and it is not easy to make a mistake with a hand file.

How'd you rivet the lower tang to the receiver?



 

There two rivets holding the rear of the trigger guard on, I drilled them out very carefully. I took a flat piece of steel and drilled two recesses in it for the rivets, and used a piece of round bar in my press to squish them.

You can also use small round head socket cap screws and nuts.
Use a permanent Loctite on the nuts and they hold as well as rivets, and are a lot easier to install.
Usually, you have to slightly relieve the stock to make room for the rear screw, but this is easy.

The advantage of the socket screws is that you don't need riveting tools, and the screws are a lot easier to get a tight fit with.

To install, file off the head of the rear trigger guard rivet and use a punch to punch the rivet out.  Drill an additional rear hole.  Install the screws with nuts, make a small cut on the stock socket to clear the screw nut and you're good to go.
