I picked up a cheap set of 18" bolt cutters to make my rivet squashers... if I go slow and keep it cool while grininding can I get away without heat treating them after the mod? I am planning on heating the rivet shank to red hot before squashing.

The set I made have several builds on them and I never heat treated.  Just keep it cool while grinding and make sure to have nice rounded corners to prevent cracking.

I heat treated mine after the mod.

Probably needed it though because I welded the rivet cup on then end.

I have 7 builds on this one set and no problems so far!

Careful heating the rivets before squishing.

1. you dont need to and probably wont notice any advantage
2. you could deform the receiver if you get the torch too close to it
