I want a good AK.  I just left a gun show where I was fondling a Poly Tech pre ban AK.  It had a milled receiver, he claimed it was a Legend.  fine.  1 mag, sling and  gun asking $1275 used.  I can get into a brand new Vector for roughly $550 from my dealer.  Is the Legend really worth that much more?  I want a good gun to shoot not a wall hanger.  I don't consider the WASR-10 a good gun.  Looks like shit to me.

In my opinion you can do better with your money on a Vector product.  While it's not 100% european or chinese it's also much more affordable.  Same question can be asked if a preban HK is worth the extra dough vs a PTR product.

If you want a nice milled gun for less, I'd try an Arsenal SAM7.. they can be had for about $650. Good stamped guns are even less. What features do you want?

Best bang for your buck is going to be something from Arsenal Inc.  You might want to consider waiting for the SLR-108.  Should be a european correct AK for $500-$600.

The only reason to pay that kind of money for the Poly Tech is if you are a serious AK collector.  If you are an AK shooter like a lot of us and you want a milled AK I also would recommend the Arsenal.  Leave the Poly for the collectors who get wood when they see a double underfolder.

Features I am looking for.  I just want a "correct looking" AK,  European or Chinese.  I don't really care if it is milled or stamped.  I just want it to look good and work great.  what is an SLR-108 and who handles them.

Almost all AKs work great - fit and finish vary widely. Do you want a fixed stock or folder? If folder, there's about half a dozen kinds to choose from.

Get a preban stamped reciever Chinese AK for around $600-$800.....depending on what you want...underfolder or full stock. Chinese AKs are the caddilacs of AKs and PolyTech is the royalty.

+1. Look for a nice Arsenal, you will be very happy. If what you want is a shooter, and you aren't an avid collector, then Arsenal is the way to go. Use the money you will have saved for ammo and mags.

They always dabble in the dark side.

Everyone is saying Arsenal, but for some options you could check out Global Trades. Good Luck!

This may be a good choice for you: www.atlanticfirearms.com/programming/expand.asp?Prodid=218

Atalantic also sells Vector manufactured AK's.
If you deal with Atlantic, ask to speak to Blaine and ask for your AR15.com discount.

We do not know if we will get anymore in and the price will probably go up, the price we have listed in 2005 but will not know until a new shipment arrives, we do have the Armory USA SSR 56 in stock your price $539

none are in stock, and they have no idea if they'll get anymore

A Romanian AK is as functional as any other AK.

On the Atlantic site I am leaning towards the Vector classic AK.  pre ban style, 5 year warranty.  Anybody have any negative opinions on it?  I'm gonna call tomorrow if it is in stock.

You will be doing just fine with the Vector classic.  Good company, good rifle, good warranty.

Everyone says the vectors are great. I personally dont like the finish they use, it can end up really grey, but they should go bang every time you pull the trigger, like AKs do.

I sent in my money to Atlantic on Tuesday for a Vector Classic pre-ban style AK.  Blaine said they were in stock.  I'm hoping for a 2 week turn around.   (looking at calender impatiently)

i love my wasr, but no doubt you can get one better if your willing to spend the extra loot. Its all what you want. I have never heard a bad word about arsenal and the people here arent ak shooters, theyre ak conniseurs.

The vector classic- does it have a chrome lined barrel? Infantryman you did good on an AK, very nice weapon system, reliable, and they are accurate despite what people say- you just have to use the irons. You can always upgrade to an optics rail and scope outfit, some guys use the Russian scopes on SVD style AK's and get sub MOA groups, course we're talking about different calibers but anyway you'll see. I love my AK's.

I've been told all Ak except the Yugo's are chrome lined.  So I am gonna guess they are chrome lined barrel and chamber.

I've been told they (Vector) are chrome lined.  I am out to lunch.  I finally buy an AK and now this mini ammo shortage thing is happening  Jimmney Christmas just my luck.  Never thought I'd see the day that I'd be longing for a box of Wolf ammo.  I refuse to shoot the shit in my AR's but for this AK it is just what the doctor ordered.  I bought some soft point Federal 7.62x39.  That should work fine for now.

Im just about to buy the vector underfolder from Atlantic. Anything I should know about the underfolder? Does anyone here own one, any problems with the underfolder stock?

I've shot one before.  But really why do you want one?  they are not comfortable to shoot.  Look cool I suppose.

Infantryman, basically Im looking for a good quality AK that can be fired normally and also break down to a shorter version with the underfolder. Uncomfortable to shoot? Is it the shape of the stock itself or what? Im  new to AK's, you think I should go with the Vector Classic? Fill me in on the details.
thanks

ive had good luck with nornico/polytech. you can get a mak90 for about 450 that is one of the best ak types available for shooting.

as far as the underfolder:  you weld your cheek to a iron rail.  not great.  imho

but hey, personal preference.  buy what you want to.

I had a few underfolders, don't like em' really. Not many do I guess. Get a sidefolder or go fixed stock for the most comfort in shooting.
