This isn't the one used later in the season, but the one in Cohle's toolbox.

Pretty Sure its an AMD-65 Hungarian judging by the Gas Block if that helps and the shortness of the barrel but I'm no expert but I hope it helps

No AMD hand guards and that looks like barrel in front of the front sight and not the AMD brake which has side ports.  Other than that I have no clue what it is, looks like a Bubba-gun.
I think I spy a third pin also.

Googled some images, looks Hungarian

There is another AK later in the series and I was wondering about that one as well.

Handguards are shortened. It's a Custom job the handguards give it away. I have an AMD 65 with a AMMS underfolder it looks a lot like it but just a little longer.

The booze bottle really adds to it.

Carcosa.

The rifle reminded me of the one in Terminator 3 that Katherine Brewster used. Wouldn't surprise me if it was the same prop.

If you look at the pics from IMFDB, the version used in all of the movies ( Terminator 3, Pineapple Express, Taken, etc.) has a single rivet underfolding stock. The True Detective gun uses a double rivet stock. Maybe they changed it or it could be from a different prop house.

It's is from the characters rouge undercover days before becoming a homicide detective.  Its a really good show and I very much recommend it.

As a side note, I knew a LEO who had a S&W L-frame 7-shot revolver finished in Robar NP3 for undercover work.  He said traditional service autos may give away his status.  So the Desert Eagle in the story definitely makes some sense.
