Every so often I get the urge to "consolidate" around a single center-fire caliber and trade/sell everything that doesnt use that caliber. Lately I have been getting the urge to get back into AK's and 7.62x39, for several reasons. When I sell off part of the collection, I usually end up regretting it. So maybe I will get some more 7.62AK ammo and just keep my other stuff.

Anyone else get these "urges"? Maybe its the beans I had last night?

sold my AR quite awhile back to help fund my krink. Never looked back.

5.45 here

Edit: Oh yeah, im buying an AR-10 soon

now that the kids are off to school....

At the time I sold my AR, I consolidated to 5.45X39. Had 2 74's and the krink. I have since switched to 7.62X39, with the exception being my krink.
Link Posted: 9/14/2009 4:56:10 AM EST
I still have four AR-15s and one AR-10.

I am looking at potentially thinning the AR herd though.

I'll never sell an AK.

sold my AR and bought an XCR. Now I can enjoy both .223 and 7.62x39 in a modern rifle depending on my mood.

Just counted. 12 different centerfire rifle calibers. I won't be getting rid of any of them. Why would you?

For me I lost interest in 7.62x39 because of the great performance of 5.45, .223 is just to expensive to fool with in large quantities and other than a cool little Marlin 22 I don't have anything else to stock for.

I'm basically good on 5.45 and 7.62x54r, anything else isn't particularly attractive at the moment.

Link Posted: 9/14/2009 9:38:23 AM EST
Four AR's out the door. Now I have one AK and ammo.
Link Posted: 9/14/2009 9:54:13 AM EST
I keep a token AR around just to stay familiar with the platform.

I love shooting 7.62x39 but it's a tad expensive right now. 5.45 gets shot the most.
Link Posted: 9/14/2009 10:07:21 AM EST
.

I came closer to consolidating on 5.45 and/or 7.62x54r than 7.62x39.

I am down to a relative few rifle calibers now.

.22 LR
5.45x39
.223 / 5.56 NATO
6.8
.30-06
.30 Carbine
.308 / 7.62 NATO
30-30
.303 British
7.92 (8mm) Mauser
7.62x54r
7.62x39

I'd have less but that C&R and collector mentality keeps me from getting rid of things.

what is this sell a rifle?
Link Posted: 9/14/2009 10:18:34 AM EST
I've tried consolidating a couple times and it didn't work. I appreciate all the common modern military calibers for their advantages/disadvantages.
Link Posted: 9/14/2009 10:27:58 AM EST
Consolidation?

Fuck consolidation.

Variety is the spice of life.
Link Posted: 9/14/2009 11:29:07 AM EST
I'm not one to consolidate cartridges. I presently own firearms in eight different rounds. But I did get rid of an M4gery to make way for an 5.56 AK as my "go to" carbine.

For the most part it is 7.62x39 for me, but I do see 5.45 in my future. I like AK's more then any other rifle, and I think they are best used with the ammo they were made for. I love my 5.56 AK's, but some American ammo just doesn't do well in them. My 7.62 AK's on the other hand have never failed regardless of what ammo I use. I have only had one 5.45 rifle, that was a Krebs AK105, and it also did not have the teething problems that I experienced with my 5.56 AK's. I sold that rifle to one of my soldier's when I left Ft. Drum, and I regret that decision so fucking much it makes me want to pull my hair out.

I will always keep my 7.62 AK's around, and it is my caliber of choice for SHTF. With my SGL20 I can hit human sized targets all day long accurately at 300 meters, and that is good enough for me. My WSAR is sort of my practice gun, it gets used, and abused. It is not as accurate as my SGL but anything between 0 - 250 meters consider it dead. The only thing, that is a bitch for me is the weight, my vest that I have can hold 12 30rd mags, and when fully loaded can get pretty damn bulky.
Link Posted: 9/14/2009 2:14:08 PM EST
Im not a big fan of the 7.62x39, never liked the recoil "impulse" in the 7.62 AK platform. Now 5.45.... I have 2 AR rifles left and to be honest if they weren't both NFA firearms I'd be down to one. You really must have one AR platform, Simply too many M16/AR's floating around not to. Same story on 5.56mm, I can see the wisdom of a AK106 5.56mm rifle but the possible issues that we've all heard about and the idea of buying 20 or so new 5.56 mags have keep me from jumping to 5.56. I doubt Ill ever buy a 7.62 AK tho the 107cr's/105's are sexy. I like the AK platform (with simple modern upgrades) better than the AR series and have stockpiles of 5.45 and 40 or so mags, So its AK74 for me. If I run across a good deal on a 106 ill pick it up just to cover my bases on ammo availability. Having said that if i ever ditch all but one caliber it'll be 7.62x51, sorry if im down to one caliber/rifle the M1a wins simply because its a real battlerifle caliber, is commonly available stateside(even in the event of TEOTWAWKI) ,turns cover into concealment, and makes things very dead. As a follow ARFCOMER once said "If it takes 20 rounds of .308 and don't die, well then it just don't die!"
Link Posted: 9/14/2009 3:11:31 PM EST
Im looking at parting with at least one AR and while tempted by the 5.45 ammo prices and flat trajectory and generally better accuracy over the 7.62x39, I still prefer the 7.62 for its availability and knock down "thump".

traded my single AR for a Polytech I still have .223 guns though including a SAM5, Galil, NHM90/84s. they have no problems eating steel case 5.56 may get another AR in the future, perhaps a piston 1.
Link Posted: 9/14/2009 3:42:14 PM EST
I added a CZ bolt action carbine some time back in 7.62 x 39. lots of fun, shoots 1.25 to 1.50 moa at 100yds with wolf.
Link Posted: 9/14/2009 4:44:51 PM EST
Nope, matter of fact I've sold 3 AK's this year and kept one. Still have 4 AR's.
Link Posted: 9/14/2009 5:40:32 PM EST
My biggest problem is cash flow! 2 years ago, I had AK's, AR's, FAL's, and various bolt action rifles. Since I got laid off and have been doing crappy side jobs for over a year, I decided to consolidate to almost 1 caliber. That way, I could buy ammo with what little fundage I do have. I already had a good stash of 5.45, and have been building up my 7.62X39 pile. My who attitude would be like several other guys above, "why sell? Why consolidate?" if my economical status hadn't taken a huge dump on my head. Needless to say, with my consolidation, I have been able to acquire a good stash of mags and ammo for my 2 7.62 rifles, and already had a great stash of the 5.45. I feel comfy right now. If things change, I will get some more variety

I've always regreted getting rid of any gun. They never seem to go down in price, only up. Once you get rid of one it always seems to be "I wish I'd kept that one". With the laws always getting more strict, you never know if it can even be replaced .
Link Posted: 9/14/2009 6:38:37 PM EST
I would never sell an AR or AK unless I was replacing it with another.

Right now I have:

5 - 9mm pistols
2- MAK90s in 7.62x39
2- AR's in 223
1- rem700 308
1- ruger mkIII .22lr

Looking to buy a 10/22 soon and a YHM mite suppressor for the MKIII and 10/22.

I sold a wasr2 awhile back because it was a POS and an AR upper during the obama nonsense. Other than that I have kept my calibers pretty simple and few.
Link Posted: 9/14/2009 6:48:35 PM EST
I sold off all my ak' s and sks's to fund ar's awhile back. Never looked back, I just recently traded for a wasr and long for more.
Link Posted: 9/14/2009 7:24:02 PM EST
As far as AR's go I'm down to one nib 6920 that I will keep but probably never shoot or modify. I also was impressed with the AK-74 when I recently aquired an SLR-105 and couldn't believe how accurate it was. I am working on a Bulgarian triangle folder kit also. In the mean time I am getting as much mags and ammo as I can. I do love my FAL too though.
Link Posted: 9/14/2009 7:25:49 PM EST
Sell guns. No thanks.
I prefer 223/556. AK 106 or M4gery for me. I'm looking into getting a 545 but that would be more for shooting. Shooting an AK47 and AK74 side by side I have to say 545 and 556/223 absolutely beats 762x39 in that platform hands down.
Link Posted: 9/14/2009 8:34:44 PM EST
I've actually gone the other way, and gotten rid of my 7.62x39s for 5.56. I have quite a few AR's, and my current AK is a side folder in .223. This allows me to consolidate ammo, and Wolf .223 is basically the same price as 7.62x39.

I did the same thing. When Barry was elected I figured one of the first things he would do was stop importation of ammo. There is no reasonably priced AK ammo made here. So I ditched my AKs and went back to ARs. I still think he will try something along these lines before he is out on his ass.

You made the right choices. Times in my life I had to part with things to get by and other times I refused to sell certain things to get by, when you finally make it and kept that on thing you were tempted to sell you're pretty happy to have it still at the end of it all.
Link Posted: 9/15/2009 5:30:38 AM EST
Ive never sold any of my rifles I have both ar's and ak's. Just because ammo gets expensive it doesnt mean you should sell off to consolidate. Just put that rifle in closet for a while. Just buy ammo here and there.
Link Posted: 9/15/2009 10:12:42 AM EST
I got rid of my ARs and went with AKs. My choice was based on my like for the AK system vs the AR system. I have not looked back or regretted the move.

No, I like having both platforms.
Link Posted: 9/16/2009 12:46:20 AM EST
hell no. i've got them all. 4 akm's. 1 rpk. 4 ak74's. 3 ar15's one in 5.45! don't forget .22, 9mm, 12g, 7.62x54, etc. etc.
Link Posted: 9/16/2009 8:30:35 AM EST
Well I have four AKs (two each 47's & 74's ) and only one AR, my Colt. I plan on selling both my Sig 556 and 556P (was going to do a SBR build) and get an Arsenal SLR-107CR to SBR and a DDM4 and call it quits on rifles for a good while then concentrate on ammo and parts to keep me up and running. I like both platforms and in the age of new whiz bang vapor wear rifles they are going to be around for a long, long time.

I do though entertain the idea from time to time of consolidating to one platform or the other and get down to one caliber from the three that I currently have. But then there is 7.62x51....ho hum.....
Link Posted: 9/16/2009 8:57:30 AM EST
it's all 7.62x39 for me.

Until the Magpul / Bushy / Remington ACR comes out. Then I'll get a 5.56.

Nope I sold two of my ak's in 7.62 and most of my SKS's. I actually prefer the 5.45 in my ak74 and have stocked up on that instead of the 7.62.
I did consolidate calibers, but not by much.

.22
.32
9mm
40
.223
7.62x39
308
5.54
6.5
303
7mm
8mm
30carb
7.62x54
12ga
7.5
30.06

I also have 2 AR's that will not be going anywhere soon.
Link Posted: 9/17/2009 5:45:38 AM EST
I don't think I would ever sell my AR's and replace them with ak47's. However, If I could find a nice ak74 maybe....well no I'd still have AR's but I would rather have ak74's than ak47's.
