I've decided to have Lancaster install a side scope mount on my Russian Red before they ship it out.  Is there any disadvantage whatsoever to doing this, aside from aesthetics?  I just may want to add a red dot at some point, and I have heard this is the best way, by far, to mount.

Thanks,

Burns

I'd rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.  Four of my AKs have side rails, and I'm glad the rails are there whether I'm currently using them or not.  It's nice to have options and the rail doesn't get in the way when not in use.  My 2 cents on the matter...

I use a variety of combloc optics and have really gotten to like them. I wouldn't buy a rifle now without a rail actually, whether I mount anything or not. It's just a handy option, not the only way to mount optics but one of the simplest and cheapest.

Thanks, that's what I was hoping to hear.

The only bad part of a side rail is you add a few ounces to the weight.  However, it is easily worth it in my opinion.

Lancaster said they would do it for $30 so I went for it.  After reading about the Kobra and others, I am thinking about adding a Russian Optic, or possibly a Vortex Strikefire to switch off between the AR and AK, so it should be easier with the mount.  Thanks.

that doesnt seem like a good idea.  you will have to:
1. put on the AK - sight it in for the AK
2. take it off the AK and put on AR -  sight it in for the AR
3. take it off the AR and put on the AK - sight it in again for the AK
seems like a waste of time and ammo

i would definately pick up an optic for each one
